Rivington Pike Fell Race, Officiate/Chief Marshal required.
For the past few years I have dealt with the administration side of the running & organization of the Pike Race (Easter Weekend) Whilst on the day of the race Pete Bland has officiated over the event. In the case of the 2012 race and subsequent pike races we are now left without anyone to officiate on the day. As such we need a volunteer from the club to officiate and oversee proceedings on race day. I have formally registered the 2012 race with the FRA and will continue with the raft of administration that goes with this race to help the event proceed.
Please contact me if you are interested in helping fulfill this role.

Help at Bolton, Leverhulme Park Cross Country 12th Nov
On Saturday Bolton Harriers host the third round of the Red Rose Cross Country races for the 2011-2012 season. I am looking for some help/support with marshalling the early races for the boys and girls.
Any seniors able to arrive for the early races – 12.30pm to 1.15pm would be most appreciated. Any parents of the little runners who can stay for 20mins after their race could also marshal for 15mins – that would be excellent.
This is our commitment to the league as we cannot host our own cross country. Thanks.

Belmont Winter Hill Fell Race 12th May
A superb turnout of 18 Harriers took part in this local fell race organised superbly by Dave Bateson in excellant conditions although it was very muddy after noon hill, Nick Leigh of Pudsey won the race. First home for us was Rob Howarth with a brilliant run in 9th and first O/50 closely followed by Mick Green 12th and Andy Lloyd 15th and these three made up the winning team. Not to be outdone the Ladies won also with Suzanne Budgett 1st o/40 and 3rd place, together with Susan Flatters 4th and Kate Porter 10th making a clean sweep for Horwch. Another category winner Tony Hesketh was 1st o/60 in 28th place. There where 113 finishers.
Belmont Junior Races
In the Under 12 junior race young 9 year old Tom Massey had a brilliant run finishing 4th, Daniel Rowe was 8th and Livia Carwright was 3rd girl after a great run.

A massive thank you to everybody who ran, but a bigger thank you to all the lads who ran at such short notice, like Rob who rushed over from Wetherby at the last minute to run on Leg 11. Thanks also to Pete Ramsdale for bringing the tent and to my missus Jane for helping out on the day with numbers , and babysitting duties etc.
Once again it was a very stressful week for me and Ali as we tried to coax and cajole people to run for the club, we have 200 members but you wouldnt think so when you try and put a team together. The race was advertised on the website front page for at least 6 weeks and I personally e.mailed at least 40 people 6 times but still we were runners short on the Friday. It seems strange that me and Tony are in our 65th years of age and still are running for Horwich in the A Team ( Yes the A Team )
Anyway
On the plus side we had a great day out, we met runners we hadn’t seen for ages, we chatted to other team members, it was like a festival of running and very enjoyable.

Horiwch RMI Harriers Beginners Group Sunday Run
1st April 2012 – Lower Rivington 5k
Sunday runs are back to normal non-marathon and I am doing a 5k and a 10k one rolled into one run, and the starter is an easy and flat 5k run from Lower Barn around the trails leading to the Castle and then back again to Lower Barn – the 10k runners will do a couple of km before the 5k, and then after the 5k we’ll head up and weave through the Chinese Gardens, up to the Pike and then back to the Castle car park.

Rivington 5k run #1 – meet at Lower Barn/Go Ape please for a 9:15 start.

Two routes shown…
The green is 5k starting at Lower Barn, and runs around the reservoir trails, past the castle, and back.
The red is 10k and starts at the Caslte car park, picks up the 5k route and then carries on to head up to the Pike using what is probably the most scenic route through the Chinese Gardens. |
Any questions then please feel free to ask, and please if you are going to come along then drop me either a txt (07530 758186) or email (carl@balshaw.me) so that I know who is coming.

Horiwch RMI Harriers Beginners Group Sunday Run
25th March 2012 – Dimple, Witton Weavers and Jumbles
Sunday’s run is a nice and easy relaxed saunter route around Wayoh, Jumbles, and Turton&Entwistle reservoirs – there are two meet up points, which will be the same ones for next Sunday as well – and the choice of doing 8miles, 10miles or 16miles – pace is going to be very steady and the shorter distances are around the reservoirs, which is both quite scenic and flat trail running. We’ve done a similar route last summer a couple of times, but am adding in a bit of new terrain, though with these reservoirs there is only one way to run around them.
Map My Run route
http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/edit/76763388/
16 miler meet up is Dimpla at 8am, 8/10 milers meet up at Turton&Entwistle Reservoir for 9am, 10milers will run the whole route around all three reservoirs, 8 milers can shortcut back over the embankment and skip running the 2miles around Turton&Entwistle Reservoir.
OS Map Route
 |
The route starts for the 16miler at Dimple, we park in a small sidestreet off the main road, and then head over towards Belmont Reservoir along Witton Weavers Way, turning off and cutting back on ourselves to Turton Reservoir, around the base of Turton Heights and then down to the car park to pick up any 10 miler runners; the rest of the run is around the three main reservoirs here, this is essentially a flat run, but the reservoirs are on different levels and so there are a couple of climbs, but is otherwise a nice easy and quite scenic route. |
Meet up is 8am at Dimple for 16 miler
http://maps.google.co.uk/?f=q&hl=en&sll=&sspn=&t=h&q=53.6365,-2.4470
Alternative meet up point is 9am at the main car park for Turton&Entwistle Reservoir
http://maps.google.co.uk/?f=q&hl=en&sll=&sspn=&t=h&q=53.6506,-2.4232
16 miler need trail shoes please, 8/10 milers can use road or trail; everyone should have some kind of light weight waterproofing in case of poor weather, hi viz as a layer should be fine for this run as we are not going up on the fells, and water – 500ml for everyone – jelly babies are also good
Any questions then please feel free to ask, and please if you are going to come along then drop me either a txt (07530 758186) or email (carl@balshaw.me) so that I know who is coming.
Cheers

I’m racing with a team from work doing the Grizedale Adventure Challenge in Cumbria, this Saturday, 24th, it’s a 2km trail run/25ish km MTB around the North Face trail (red) followed by 4km fell run, an incidental kayak, another 4km fell run followed by an assault course. Last year we came 3rd without trying to hard and one of the team members got cramp. One the team members, the who got cramp, has pulled put has damaged wrist and will struggle on bike section. Does anyone fancy doing it to make a team of 3? We can give a lift up to Grizedale if needed.

You may have noticed that a twitter feed has been added to the front page of the website. The intention is to use twitter to briefly report on race results and pictures, and preview upcoming events.
The latest entries on the @horwichharriers twitter feed will always appear front page. If you already have a twitter account, you can follow @horwichharriers to get the latest posts in your timeline, and view older posts.
The most useful feature is the how easy it is to submit postings to appear in the @horwichharriers feed. Just include @horwichharriers in your tweet, and this will be picked up an re-tweeted to appear on the @horwichharriers feed. So if you’ve been out racing, let us know what you’ve been up to with a quick tweet.
The twitter feed will not replace the more detailed articles (so keep them coming) but will complement them with quicker and more immediate links and snippets on what been going on.
This is a bit of an experiment at the moment, and one that will work best with contribution from members, so sign up to twitter, follow @horwichharriers, and get tweeting.

Saturday 9th – Sunday 10th June 2010.
Running the length of Wales – 200+ miles over 2 days, 20 stages, starting at Caernarfon Castle on Saturday morning, with an overnight halt at Newtown and finishing on Sunday afternoon at Cardiff Castle.
This year will see the 30th running of the Welsh Castles Relay. To mark this milestone we would like to take a team back to this race which was a popular annual outing for the harriers back in the 80s, where the club finished 2nd overall twice.
We wouldn’t be trying to win the overall race but aim to win some stages and possibly King of the Mountains. Cost £5.00 per runner. As well as runners we would need a small team of people to help with the organisation.
We need to know before this weekend if there is enough interest so we can enter a team.
If you are interested in running, or to be part of the organising team please contact Steve Pearson as soon as possible.

Last Saturday The Fifth round of the Mid Lancs XC races was contested.
First up was Nathan Townsend in the U15’s boys. Having a great race after initially leading for some time. Nathan earned himself a great 6th place.
The Senior Men lead the way with Gareth Booth home in 8th, pleased with that. An excellent 36th and 38th from Zac Howe & David Jackson gave the team a good start. Andy Townsend and Tim Roe both much quicker times than Last Year home in 38th & 57th. We needed a good performance from Doug Fleming who did not disappoint home in 79th. This gave the team a well deserved 5th place and more importantly still retaining 3rd in the league. It will all be hinged on the last race at Leyland to claim the bronze. Guys lets have as good a turnout as we did at Hynburn.
It is with sadness that I must report the death of long time member Barry Horrobin.
His funeral will take place on Friday 17th February at 2:15 p.m., East Chapel, Overdale Crematorium.

Tony Hesketh was first O/60 in 97th with newcomer Layne Mercer 109th after a fine run our final runner was Alan Blinkhorn 389th well pleased with his run.
Normal Matthews Winter Hill Fell Race
30th Winter Hill Fell Race (Sunday 12th Feb 2012)
I would like to thank everyone who helped to make today’s event run smoothly. Without the marshals, time keepers and the Mountain Rescue the race could not go ahead. Given that conditions out on Winter Hill were amongst the worst that the race has been run in it is a thank you that is more than deserved by all who helped.

“Much of the race route is currently covered in potentially dangerous hard ice. The race will not go ahead with the route in its present condition ie it will be cancelled if the ice does not go by Sunday.
We will be making an inspection of sections of the route early on Saturday morning and emailing out to team captains at 10.00 am to advise them of the outcome. We will also post our findings here on
this site.
If the event is cancelled it will not be rearranged at a later date and teams will have their entry fee refunded.”

Marshals Needed
This years Norman Matthews Winter Hill Fell Race takes place
on the 12th February this year and the race depends upon
the support and good will of not just the local land owners
but of the club members in order to provide marshals and
support so that the race can be run safely and as a shared
responsibility within the club.
Please, if you have not marshalled before, then do so now.
Many people within the club put a great deal of effort into
organising and catering for not just the races, but relay teams,
coaching, events and presentation evenings – we need your
help and support to continue to do so.
Many thanks

Hyndburn Cross Country – Saturday 14th Jan 2012
On a beautiful sunny day, in fantastic conditions under foot, we had our best turnout of Horwich RMI runners for many a day. The Target was to beat Preston and remain in bronze medal place in the league and we did it with ease so thanks go to everybody who turned out and especially our first 6 placed runners who made the team.
Too many runners (17) to mention everyone by name but just a few names that need a mention – another quality run by Gareth in 11thOverall looking stronger this year, great 2nd place by young Dave looking good on the country, Zach is maintaining his fast starts for longer now and bring on the day he keeps it up all the way round, he was leading after 400mtrs. Graham is back in form after his short break from running and was flying towards the end passing Jonesy who was slip sliding around in his Nike road shoes, then making up the team in 6th place was the ever improving Andy Townsend just holding off Sean by 16 seconds. Good team effort lads.
Nice to see Andy Porter back racing and looking good, Billy looked out of place in 187th but rumour had it that he had not run for 6 weeks and this was his comeback run.
Thanks again to Pete Ramsdale for bringing the tent and looking after everybody on the day.

Horwich Ladies take Ribble 10k team prize
On a perfect day for running in the picturesque Ribble Valley , 3 good solid performances by the Horwich RMI ladies team took the team prize in this high quality race of almost 1000 runners. The team was led home by Rachel Thompson in a brilliant time of 36.48 closely followed by an ever improving Debbie Campbell in 38.04. Gemma Jones was our third counter not far behind in a gutsy 41.03. Well done ladies.
In what was one of the most high quality mens races I have seen for a while Gary Priestley ran a brilliant 31.37 and the ever improving Andy Townsend ran 36.34. Gary will now go into the Nos Galan 5k on New years eve with enough confidence to run a PB, good luck Gary

HOSPITAL RUN THURSDAY 22nd DECEMBER 2011
The Hospital Run this year will take place on Thursday 22nd December 2011 and consist of the normal 10.5 mile route.
For anyone unfamiliar with this traditional club training run it takes a route from Horwich Leisure Centre down to the Crown Hotel and along Chorley New Road to the junction with Chorley Old Road in Bolton, where the former Royal Bolton Hospital used to stand (approx. 5.9 miles). Hence the title Hospital Run. The run to this point is at a very, very steady pace. From here the run starts in earnest and is done at near to race pace along Chorley Old Road to finish back at the Leisure Centre (approx. 4.6 miles).
This year there will be four groups starting from the Leisure Centre, at 7.00 p.m. for the slowest group and then at 5 minute intervals with the fastest group setting off at 7.15 p.m. This is to ensure that all runners arrive at the Hospital at about the same time. Only when all runners have assembled at the Hospital will the run for home begin.
Please assemble in the foyer of the Leisure Centre.
Note: Lockers are available in the Leisure Centre, as are showers for a small fee.
ALL CLUB MEMBERS WITH GUESTS ARE WELCOME
PLEASE TELL AS MANY MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE THE DATE OF THIS YEARS RUN
FOR SAFETY REASONS PLEASE WEAR A RUN-A-BRITE OR BRIGHT COLOURED TOP.
PLEASE NOTE THAT A DRINK AND ENJOYABLE SOCIAL CHAT IS TO BE HAD IN THE BRIDGE PUBLIC HOUSE OPPOSITE THE LEISURE CENTRE AFTERWARDS.

Red Rose XC 2011-12
The RR committee met on Wednesday 7th Dec to confirm positions and sort trophies for the current season.
Our winners are confirmed as Lyndsey Brindle 2nd lady overall, Suzanne Budgett first lady vet and Tony Hesketh first vet 60.
We had two nearly won’s with Isabel Dean finishing in 7th in the under 11’s having an excellent season in the mud and the ladies team finished third overall – medals for first two teams – after winning in the first two races they lost by just 2 points to Rossendale 96 to 98.
Whilst this league continues to be the club’s second XC priority, all the local clubs support this league and all the races are completed by Christmas!
Presentation Saturday 4th Feb 2012 from 7.30pm in the Horwich RMI club – Tickets £4 and £3 available from Pete Ramsdale Peter, Ramsdale XC Captain
Sunday Run - 11th December 2011
Rivington, Lead Mines and the Pike 14km Trail
Sundays run is going to start from the Lower Barn, the run follows the reservoir around and the back past the war memorial and the old lead mines, and then over Anglezark towards Holdens Stumps before climbing up towards the Pidgeon Tower, and a quick visit to the Pike and then dowqn and along behind the school towards the Barn and back to the cars
Two easy clims – trail shoes may be a good idea, but the route is ok for road shoes – future runs for a sunday are likely to be getting more offroad and so now would be a good time to get trail shoes for anyone who hasn’t got some already.
Meet up is Lower Rivington Barn for a 9am start.

David Staff Memorial Race – Darwen
Ten harriers turned out for this short, but not to be underestimated fell race. We were greeted with a dry but very windy, chilly day, especially on the top at Darwen Tower.
In the mens, Sean McMyler lead the way home for Horwich showing a further six Horwich men the way through the finish. New member Paul Jackson put in a commendable performance which bodes well for adding further strength to the mens section. In the ladies Maria Lowe maintained second overall position behind Becky Taylor of Blackburn for most of the way around. Probably due only to experience of the fells which enabled Suzanne Budgett to overtake her on the downhill from the Tower. What a great, brave effort on Maria’s part swapping tarmac for mud, heather and a rocky descent down the much eroded ‘Aggies Staircase’. I can see a great future for her on the Ian Hodgson!!! Third lady counter was Fran Walker putting in a sterling sprint finish.
Well done to all & thanks to all those who gave support.
