Help at Bolton, Leverhulme Park Cross Country 12th Nov

Help at Bolton, Leverhulme Park Cross Country 12th Nov

On Saturday Bolton Harriers host the third round of the Red Rose Cross Country races for the 2011-2012 season. I am looking for some help/support with marshalling the early races for the boys and girls.

Any seniors able to arrive for the early races – 12.30pm to 1.15pm would be most appreciated. Any parents of the little runners who can stay for 20mins after their race could also marshal for 15mins – that would be excellent.

This is our commitment to the league as we cannot host our own cross country. Thanks.

Rivington Pike Fell Race, Officiate/Chief Marshal required.

Rivington Pike Fell Race, Officiate/Chief Marshal required.

For the past few years I have dealt with the administration side of the running & organization of the Pike Race (Easter Weekend) Whilst on the day of the race Pete Bland has officiated over the event. In the case of the 2012 race and subsequent pike races we are now left without anyone to officiate on the day. As such we need a volunteer from the club to officiate and oversee proceedings on race day. I have formally registered the 2012 race with the FRA and will continue with the raft of administration that goes with this race to help the event proceed.

Please contact me if you are interested in helping fulfill this role.

AGM 2017

The clubs AGM date has been set for Wed 25th Oct at 8pm at the RMI club in Horwich.

As we look to continue to move the club forward in a positive direction we have a number of committee positions new and existing which we are looking to fill. We have a Parent Rep position,a volunteer coordinator as well as 1 ordinary member position. The Volunteer position involves helping the committee recruit and organise volunteers within the club. The parent Rep is to bring Parents views and issues to the club and likewise pass on information from the club to parents involved. The 1 ordinary position is there to just help support and help out with tasks and help spread the load within the current committee.

If anyone is interested in becoming involved in anyway to help continue our progress and move the club in the right direction please get in touch with either myself or Pete Ramsdale via the e mail addresses below

GMXC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017

GREATER MANCHESTER A.A. CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017
WOODBANK PARK, STOCKPORT
SATURDAY 7TH JANUARY 2017

The magnificent 8

Post- race: Mike/Simon/David/Ali/Nick/Sam/Mike/Jonathan

Misty, squelchy, mild conditions greeted the 118 runners tasked with completing a 10k course consisting of 3 tough but runnable loops that took in a short but steep hill on each loop – it was interesting to note quite a few runners reduced to a walk even at the front end !

However, very quickly a group of 3 runners took charge consisting of defending county champion Carl Hardman (Salford), Joe Steward (East Cheshire Harriers) and Matt Bond (Sale) all working together and quickly separating from the isolated Mike Cayton who ran in effect a time trial in 4th position but clear of all other opposition and into the county team.

The top 4 automatically secured a county vest for the inter counties xc championships on Saturday 11th March in Loughborough.

Mike was backed up with the following individuals : – Nick Leigh 10th / Jonathan Bruton 18th / Sam Wardle (u20) 19th / Ali Murray 25th / Simon Pymm 26th / Mike Hallas 44th / Dave Milliken 46th

Horwich gained a bronze team medal with 4 counters being Mike Cayton, Nick Leigh, Jonathan Bruton and Sam Wardle.

1st Salford Harriers – 44 points
2nd Sale – 49 points
3rd Horwich RMI Harriers – 51 points (4 to count)
4th Bolton harriers – 88 Points

The scoring system is changing also as usual 10 points for first Horwich junior then 9 points for second and so forth, there will be 3 bonus points for each English Champs race ran and a bonus of 5 points for the English Schools Championships. You can do more than eight races and drop your worst scores. This means our championship will run for 10 months and will give a more accurate view of the championship over a longer period with a two month break for holidays etc.

Northern and National Cross Country Entries

Northern and National Cross Country Entries

Its time to consider whether you wish to run the Northern Cross Country Championship at Knowsley Safari Park on Saturday 28th January 2017 and the National Cross Country Championship at Wollaton Park, Nottingham on Saturday 25th February 2017.

Both races are £7 to enter and the club, not individuals, make one entry for the club. So should you wish to run either or both, let me know before Wednesday 11th January 2017. The closing date is Friday 13th and no late entries will be allowed. Any one wishing to run the Nationals MUST register to run the Northerns (even if you can’t run it – this may seem strange but that’s how it works)

For information – Knowsley is a good course but always very muddy and Nottingham is a great course with little mud, just very fast grass.

Thanks

Downhill Race

Downhill Race

The annual Downhill Race took place in its usual location, on 15th September, this year a week after the Horwich beer feastival. This did unsure that all runners, marshals and supporters had no excuse after the race but to go home, as it is a school night!

As start time got nearer the merry band of runners reached a grand total of 11 participants with a wonderful spread of ages (junior men to vet 60) but all of the same gender, male.

First off was race organiser Ali closely followed, well 30 seconds later, by Andy F. “I’ll never catch him” said Andy as Ali disappeared into the distance on a quite misty evening – he did but then…… see later…….

Once all 11 had been set off successfully the time keepers, spare time keepers and supporter all jumped into and onto their mode of transport down to the RMI club. There were cars and bikes – no one sat on the roof…..

First back was Ali in 20.02 and even though he was first back, others could beat his time, so no time yet to celebrate. On the running clock Gary Chadderton was next back in 23.11, Doug Fleming 24.22, Andy Ford 26.27, Dan G 26.33, Albert Sunter 27.04, Tony Hesketh 28.13, Mark Swindell 29.01, Ian Charters 33.00 and then we had a gap. There were two runners still out, the weather was still ok but it was getting darker and our junior Sam W didn’t know the route!!!! Steve Botrill had done the race before. After a nervous wait by Sam’s mum, up he ran from Horwich town centre to finish with a time of 36.00 with Steve B completing the set in 39.55.

All back, no one lost or injured (Steve B did manage to get in a bog up to his shorts) but that just let the presentation. After some time subtractions (no possible on a calculator) Ali had the quickest tine of 20.02 with Gary C doing 21.41 and Albert S 22.04.

Thanks to all who made it possible.

Results below.

Starting order Start Time Finish time Name Cat Running Time
Ali 0.00 20.02 1 Ali 1st Vet 40 20.02
Andy 0.30 26.27 2 Gary 1st Vet 50 21.41
Doug 1.00 24.22 3 Albert 1st Vet 55 22.04
Gary 1.30 23.11 4 Doug 2nd Vet 55 23.22
Sam 2.00 36.00 5 Dan 2nd Vet 40 23.33
Tony 2.30 28.13 6 Mark 1st Vet 45 25.01
Dan 3.00 26.33 7 Tony 1st Vet 65 25.43
Ian 3.30 33.00 8 Andy 1st Sen 25.57
Mark 4.00 29.01 9 Ian 1st Vet 60 29.30
Steve 4.30 39.55 10 Sam 1st Jun 34.00
Albert 5.00 27.04 11 Steve 3rd Vet 55 35.05

I should add here that whilst Albert, Tony and Ali all had Garmin distances of 3.22m, Andy F did an incredible 4.03m so takes the ‘value for money’ prize.

Horwich Beer Festival

It only seems 5 mins since we were last here. Calling all regular & not so regular helpers for the Annual Rotary Beer Festival.
For those who are not in the know Horwich Rotary is the main Sponsor for the Pike Race where they contribute manpower and much needed funds for our Running Club. I’ve been asked to start the ball rolling to gain names for dates.

Last Year we put up a strong team of bartenders virtually the whole of the 3 days including all Saturday Night. There are many spaces to be filled with time slots starting at 12 o’clock till 3, 3 to 5, 5 to 7, 7 to 9 and 9 to 11.
Our contribution is greatly appreciated hence we gain more support towards the pike Race again.
Please, Please do not leave it to the regular Club volunteers. It’s an easy task and a great laugh all weekend.

Pendle Fell Race

Pendle Fell Race.
2nd April 2016.
Barley, Lancs.

The second race in Horwich RMI Junior Fell Championships took place at Barley with races up and down Pendle Hill, with very muddy conditions making the races tougher than usual.

First away was the U/8 and Grace Pendlebury set the standard with a third place finish after a typical gutsy race. In the U/10 Theo Middleton was 6th Boy and this was his first race in this new age group. Cian Healy in the U/12, another runner in a new age group, ran well leading for a time before settling for third just over half a minute behind the winner. Team mate Toby Middleton was a superb 5th after a very good race. The girls race saw Ella Pendlebury win a sprint finish to record a second place, Freya Whittle revelled in the conditions to finish 4th and finally Lydia Johnson also had a good race to finish 8th. Finally the U/14 Boys race saw two exceptional runs by Lucas Milliken finishing second by only ten seconds to A Thompson of Wharfdale and Robert Seddon third only 13 seconds behind. Both fantastic runs. The next Championship race is at Todd Cragg in Cumbria on the 16th April.

Hay Fever Season

Hay Fever Season
British Athletics Science and Medicine Update
06/04/2016

Hay fever is more common in athletes and around 60% of our team suffer with some of the common symptoms of blocked or runny nose, sneezing, runny eyes or even just fatigue. It can be associated with worsening of asthma symptoms if you have asthma.

Symptoms are due to an allergy to pollen, and are therefore worse when the pollen count is high. Some people are allergic to grass pollen, some to tree pollen, so different people may suffer at different times of the season (grass in Spring, tree in deep Summer).

General measures such as checking the pollen count for the next day, reducing time outdoors when the pollen count is high, having regular showers, washing hair and changing clothes after being outdoors to remove pollen that may be on your clothes or in your hair, keeping windows closed at night may help considerably. Remember, if you have pets, they can bring pollen into the house on their fur too.

There are also some excellent medications and practices which can control hay fever symptoms, most of which can be bought over the counter at a local pharmacy or department store. We advise purchasing your own stock of medications if you suffer hay fever, and take them whenever you travel to Camps or Competitions as stocks might not always be available.

Always double-check that you do not purchase anything on the Prohibited List by checking on Global DRO.

http://www.globaldro.com/uk-en/

The following recommendations have helped a number of athletes:

FOR GENERAL SYMPTOMS – SNEEZING, RUNNY NOSE, ITCHY WATERY EYES

Antihistamine Tablets

There are a number of old antihistamines on the market (such as Piriton) which are sedative and not recommended for treating hay fever in athletes. Telfast however does not pass into the brain and therefore is not sedating in nature and is an ideal anti-histamine for athletes but requires a prescription from your doctor. Cetirizine and Loratidine are over the counter antihistamines that can be helpful and usually are not sedating. There are some reports to suggest that antihistamines can affect heat regulation and possibly reaction times and therefore unless you have tried them before and have had no problem, they are not ideal medications to be taking for the first time on race day.

FOR SNEEZING, RUNNY NOSE

Nasal Corticosteroid Spray

This is the gold standard first line medication. Newer products such as Mometasone (Nasonex) and Flixonase require a prescription but Beconase nasal spray is also effective and can be purchased over the counter. You do not need a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for these nasal sprays. One/two sprays in each nostril twice daily is a typical initial dose. These are most effective if used before the onset of symptoms, and can be continued throughout the hay fever season, or just on high pollen count days.

Sterimar (Salt Water spray)

Salt water sprays, such as Sterimar, can be particularly useful to rinse pollens and pollution from your nose. These can be used several times throughout the day, particularly if you have recently been training outdoors.

Decongestant Nasal Spray – Otrivine

Otrivine nasal spray contains xylometazoline. This is a decongestant and is not on the prohibited list. It works by constricting blood vessels in the nose and is a very effective decongestant. It can be helpful to enable nose breathing at night or before a race. It should not be used for longer than 3 days continuously as doing so can result in overall worsening of the congestion. We advise AGAINST purchasing this item abroad as we cannot guarantee that it does not have any Prohibited substances in.

FOR ITCHY, WATERY EYES

Eye Drops

Sodium Cromoglycate eye drops (Opticrom) can be useful if you have itchy, watery eyes. 1-2 drops in each eye before the onset of symptoms can help prevent this being a problem. Dose can be repeated 2-3 times per day.

IF ASTHMATIC SYMPTOMS – WHEEZE, DRY COUGH, SHORTNESS OF BREATH

Those with hay fever should ensure they get tested for asthma as they commonly occur together and often asthma symptoms are not recognized but still may be negatively affecting performance. See your Doctor

Other Medications

There are some other medications, such as Montelukast (Singulair) which can be a useful addition for some athletes, particularly those with asthma in addition to hay fever. This is worth discussing with your doctor if you are still symptomatic following treatments above.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Skin prick allergy tests for pollens and pets can give good information regarding things to try to avoid. For example, those with duck feather allergy should ensure that their holding camp and championship accommodation has synthetic hypoallergenic pillows or bring their own pillow.

Lostock 6 Race Report

Lostock 6 Race Report
Sunday 28th February 2016

Chris Steele of Borders A C took the individual win in a “relatively modest” time of 29m 48 secs considering the revised course profile was fast and with ideal weather conditions.

Harriers top runner on the start line was Michael Cayton but unfortunately he had to drop out after only a few miles due to an ongoing stomach issue However, within the “MASSEY” talent pool, youngster (U17) Luke claimed first counter demonstrating all the ability of a future star. His dad Paul said afterwards “I have to accept that I will never beat Luke again as he’s growing stronger day by day”

Bolton won comfortably the team race and Horwich RMI harriers took 3rd place with contributions made by Luke, James and David

Men (3rd team)

9th Luke Massey – 33m 56s
14th James Jordan – 34m 35s
16th David Jackson – 34m 47

In the womens race Elizabeth Greenwood (Blackburn Harriers, U20) was first lady but it was Horwich RMI harriers close packing that ensured a comfortable win for the girls with great runs by Debbie, Maria and Suzanne.

Ladies (1st Team)

37th Debbie Campbell – 37m 43s
56th Maria Lowe – 39m 47s
58th Suzanne Budgett – 39m 57 s

244 runners completed the course and interestingly to note just how many vets were in the field (90% plus) !

Yours in sport, Martyn

Club Cross Country Championships

Club Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to the Senior Men of the club who have battled this winter to get Horwich promoted from the newly introduced Manchester Area Cross Country League in our first season. With just one fixture left we cannot be overtaken but we have another Championship to battle over in this final fixture.

At the club presentation night (date of which will be confirmed very shortly) we reward overall champions from the road, fell and cross country disciplines. Annually we also have a one off race for the various Club Cross Country Champions. These four categories are the senior men, vet men, senior ladies and vet ladies. There are four club trophies up for grabs at Wythenshawe Park, Manchester on Saturday 13th Feb.

So spread the news and we’ll see you there Saturday to consolidate first men’s team and to battle for intra-club glory.

Northern XC Champs

Northern XC Champs – Witten Park, Blackburn
Saturday 30th January 2016

12650822_10205964531774289_113531372781730964_n

Witton Park once again proved its status as one of the best cross country venues in the country with an excellent and tough test for all the athletes. The race route was described by many as a true cross country course and the wintry conditions of mud, hail and rain gave the event some extra spice!

In the Men’s Senior Race 719+ runners (across 52 teams) toed the line and were tasked with 4 loops of 1.81 miles – each loop comprised of two steep hills known locally as the “Saucer” which was the steepest climb (136 feet of climb) and the “T-spoon” (80 feet of climb) (Source: – Dave Jacksons Garmin watch data)

GB international Charlie Hulson (Sale Harriers) made his bid early and started to separate from an 8 man group at the end of lap 3 to finally cover the muddy, steep course in 43 mins 16 secs (5min 58 minute min / miling) – which on normal terrain would be worth at least “80 secs” per mile faster.

Our rising star Chris Farrell continues to shine and made a superb progression from 32nd position in last years race to 11th position this year. Only 3 seconds separated him from 10th position and 24 seconds from 6th position! This now provides a useful “performance and fitness indicator” and “confidence booster” as he starts to build now for a GB vest in the European and World Mountain Championships this summer. Chris remarked after the race “it was a brutal course, but brilliant”!!

Salford Harriers took the team honours, packing very tightly their 6 men, averaging out at only 20th position for each! This bodes well for their National XC championship campaign on the 27th February at Donnington Park, Leicestershire. Horwich RMI finished a credible 7th Team out of 52 but unfortunately we had some absences on the day which suggested we could have actually finished very close to a top 3 team finish with a full and healthy team! But well done to all the contributors to the team result and great to see two of our Vet 45s making up the numbers – brilliant!

Chris Farrell – 11th
Joe Mercer – 41st
James Kevan – 61st
Paul Massey -114th (Vet 45)
David Jackson – 117th (Vet 45)
Simon Pymm – 183rd

Under 17 Men

After a cautious start Luke Massey moved through the field using his natural hill strength to secure a credible 32nd position out of 105 finishers. He beat all his “local” opposition from the Greater Manchester squad and his next race will be the UK CAU Inter Counties XC Championship (Birmingham) on the 12th of March.

Finally, a mention must also go to the Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team (RPMRT) who were kept busy on the day providing fantastic medical cover. This organisation delivers an enormously beneficial system of medical cover for events like this and deserves all the support that we can give from inside the sport.

Ashurst Beacon

Ashurst Beacon Fell Race 23rd Jan 2016

Horwich RMI Harriers where out in force at the Ashurst Beacon Fell Race last Saturday which was the final race in the 2015 Championship. The underfoot conditions were very treacherous with very deep mud in places. The downhill start gets the field strung out quickly and with a one mile climb to the finish runners have to be careful not to go off to fast.

Ben Johnson of Southport won with his time well outside the course record held by Horwich’s Nick Leigh. The first Horwich finisher was Andy Ford whose 42.24 was good enough for 12th place. Two minutes behind in 23rd place came the consistent Graham Schofield – first vet O/55 in 44.31. Ian Hepburn ran well for 27th place and Nick Kelly just held off Paul Boardman by 4 seconds finishing 30th and 31st. Suzanne Budgett won her O/50 catagory in 61st and fourth lady in 49.01 with Tony Hesketh who won the race in 1988 just behind in 64th in a time of 49.18 taking the first O/65 award easily. Sandra Kelly ran well after doing a Park Run in the morning timed at 52.31 second O/45 in 94th place. Gordon Stone ran 57.30 for 122nd with Lawrence Purnell a minute behind him 131st.

Quality not Quantity

Tandle Hill XC Report from yesterday

Quality not Quantity

Horwich MRI Harriers had just 11 runners in the third South East Lancs Cross Country race at Tandle Hill Oldham on Saturday but with four 1st places and a 1st Team in the under 13 boys race, they certainly turned on the performances. In challenging muddy conditions over a quite hilly course it was always going to favour the stronger and fitter athletes.

The Under 13 boys race had Luke Brindle in 1st place in 14.51, on a course where he won last year, and with Robert Seddon 5th in 15.35, Matthew Mair 6th in 15.42 and Mathhew Flatters 9th in 16.06 the team prize was never in doubt. Ella Pendlebury came a very creditable 4th in 17.42 in the under 13’s girls race. In the first race of the day Lydia Johnson in the under 11’s came 14th in 11.18.

The under 15’s race saw Lewis Wilkes come 5th in 13.52. With just 14 seconds behind third place it was a close race and a good battle all the way round. The small but competitive under 17’s race saw Luke Massey turn on the style as he literally raced away with first place to finish in a time 20.22 nearly a minute ahead of second.

With the course now properly churned up with the other races, the senior men took to the course. After running the first mile with Tom McGuinness from East Cheshire Harriers, Chris Farrell pulled away in a dominant display of cross country running. Attacking every hill and making the mud seem almost non-existent Chris completed the 10km course in 36.21 over 2 minutes ahead of second place. Paul Massey had a really great performance in 5th place overall and finished first V45 in 41.59. Showing that age is no barriers John Parker was 2nd V70 in 62.44.

Attention now moves to Blackburn on Saturday for the annual Northern Cross Country Championship races. See you there.

Mid Lancs XC Hyndburn

Mid Lancs XC Hyndburn 17th Jan

A small group of Horwich RMI Harriers travelled to Accrington for the fourth race in the xc league and with the muddy conditions the races were tougher than normal.

The U/13 boys began were they left off last week with a strong team packing and winning on count back from Blackburn. Tom Massey had a superb race finishing 3rd. With Luke Brindle and Robert Seddon 8th and 9th the boys had done enough to take victory.

The U/17 boys saw Luke Massey run well for fourth place in the testing conditions.

The senior men were represented by two stalwarts of the club. Paul Massey had a great race recording 39.55 for 17th place and 6th Veteran whilst Tony Hesketh finished 3rd O/60 in 142nd place in 50.45.

Manchester Xc League / Race Report / Heaton park

Manchester Xc League / Race Report / Heaton park

Saturday 16th January 2016

Only 1 day before the race we still had a very limited squad, not even enough to form the necessary team of 6 senior men and 4 vets that would count towards our promotional prospects !

The course was a nice contrast to the mud bath of Boggart Hole Clough but equally challenging but highly runnable and each of the 3 laps (2 miles each) ending with a steep, challenging hill up into the finish area.

Interesting to note that there were no ladies competing from the club ? !

Whilst Joe and Gareth ran against the competition, 3 harriers “battled hard” against each other in a bid to claim bragging rights of the clubs “king of the Vet 45-49 age category” ! The trio ran within 5-10 seconds of each other for all 3 laps. David Jackson lived “in the shadows” for almost 38 minutes and only made his bid on the final 300m hill. Only 7 seconds in the end split Martyn Bell, Dave Jackson and Dave Milliken !!!

Final positions out of 329 finishers:

Joe Mercer – 11th
Gary Booth 20th (3rd Vets 40-44 cat)
Martyn Bell – 50th (5th vets 45-49 cat)
David Jackson – 52nd (6th vets 45-49 cat)
David Milliken – 53rd (7th vets 45-49 cat)
Andy Ford – 94th
Gary Chadderton – 170th (14th vets 50-55 cat)
Doug Fleming – 177th (7th vets 55-59 cat)
Mark Swindell – 252nd (39th vets 45-49 cat)
Eddie Simpson – 296th (45th vets 45-49 cat)
Lawrence Pinnell – 299th (47th vets 45-49 cat)
Gordon stone ? cant see name mentioned or position?

Team Position for this Match

1. Trafford
2. Salford A
3. Sale H
4. East Cheshire
5. Horwich RMI Harriers

Overall a great result for the club and even with a much weakened team we still finished 5th team in Division 1, never mind division 3 !

More comprehensive details can be found on the following website: – http://maccl.co.uk/

The “cumulative” match scores (4 completed so far) will be released by Wednesday 20th January – this information will then allow us to assess exactly what we need to do as a team to secure our promotion into Division 2 for next year. Results for Saturday’s race can be found on the link below.

http://www.race-results.co.uk/results/2016/maccl154.htm

The last match of the season will be held at Wythenshawe Park, Manchester, M23 0PH on Saturday 13th February.

Greater Manchester XC

Greater Manchester XC Championships 9th Jan

A very muddy and testing course greeted the runners for the annual XC Championships at Leverhulme Park.

The Horwich U/13 boys began proceedings with a brilliant team performance with their three scorers finishing in the first ten. Tom Massey who is in fine form at the moment led them home in an excellent 4th place in 12.08 closely followed by Luke Brindle 6th in 12.45 with Robert Seddon finishing 10th in 13.01. The Silver Medals were won. The remaining Horwich runners who all ran well were Matthew Flatters 15th and Matthew Maer 16th, seperated by only three seconds, and Toby Middleton 24th in 13.38.

In the U/13 girls Ella Pendlebury finished 18th only a minute behind the winner and Milly Lever running in her first championships finished a well deserved 49th.

The only representative in the U/15 was Lewis Wilkes and he recorded 17.05 for the 4k course.

Luke Massey in the U/17 race finished just outside the County qualifying positions in sixth place and will have to wait and see if the selectors pick him for the Inter Counties.

Over 400 runners gathered at the start for this popular fell race. The conditions were good for racing although very muddy. Chris Farrell had a brilliant race sitting on England International Tom Adams shoulder until the final mile he pulled away to record a famous victory in 41.19. Another great run came from Irish International Kilian Mooney with a third place finish in 42.55. Another low scoring counter was required for the team award and this came from Michael Cayton who recorded 42.55 in an excellant 9th place. This clinched the team prize by some way. Other good runs came from Paul Boardman 119th in 57.28 and Steve Jackson was third O/60 in 146th place in a time of 58.48. Prediction Race

Prediction Race 30th December 2015

Despite the bad weather 16 Horwich juniors braved the elements to run a 2k course just below the Pigeon Tower.

Runners had to predict what time they would record with the nearest winning a prize. Lewis Wilkes won the race in a brilliant time of 8.14 and was second in the predictions with Theo Middleton guessing to within 4 seconds taking the prize for nearest. U/11 star Cian Healy was second finisher in 8.38 after a typical gutsy run and was third in the predictions.

In the girls race Ella Pendlebury ran well to finish first girl holding off a fast finishing Niamh Speakman with U/11 Grace Pendlebury finishing third after a good race.

First Horwich Cross Country a Massey Success

First Horwich Cross Country a Massey Success

The first cross country of the new season for Horwich RMI took place on a very pleasant sunny Astley park course on Saturday and was dominated by the Massey family. Dad Paul was first in his age category with son’s Thomas in the under 13’s and Luke in the under 17’s both finishing second. A truly exceptional afternoons racing. The Mid Lancs six race series started with some excellent individual performances and some great team results too.

The firt race of the day was the under 11 girls race and Chloe Fitzgerald was 56th in 8.52 and Skye Nicholson was 59th in 9.04.

Cian Healy set off very quickly at the start of the under 11 boy’s race and stormed around the course with some other very quick athletes. As they approached the final 100m, Cian had a little too much to do and finished just one second behind the winner Dexta Thompson of Clayton. Cian’s time was 5.55 for this 2km course.

After winning the Under 13 team award last year the Horwich juniors were keen to retain their trophy and with Thomas Massey second in 12.37, Matthew Flatters 6th in 12.54, Luke Brindle 7th in 13.08 and Lucas Milliken 18th in 13.49 it was going to be close. Blackburn finished with 12 points and Horwich 15, so second place today but lots to chase during the season.

In the under 15’s race Lewis Wilkes and Kieran Kinealy have moved up from under 13’s last year but both performed well with a 4th place and 19th place respectively. Lewis moved up to second during the race only to finish 8 second behind the winner.

In the under 17 race Luke Massey put his recent speed work sessions to test against a very strong field of young men from clubs around the area. He ran a very controlled race always looking in contention for a podium position and battled well to finish in second place on the 6km course in 22.39.
Debbie Campbell was the only Horwich lady in the women’s race and she ran strongly in a very competitive race to finish 7th in 27.07.

In the Men’s race Paul Massey completed the family outing with a strong performance completing the three lap course in 38.18 in 26th position. He was also 1st vet 40. With the other vets of Andy Lloyd, Alastair Murray and Dave Milliken and finishing in 37th, 46th and 51st the Vet 40 team was always going to be a strong contender for a podium finish. This they achieved and took first place. A great team effort. The senior team of six was completed with Chris Essex-Crosby in 72nd and David Barnes in 196th position. Mark Swindell, birthday boy Gordon Stone just moving into the V60 category along with John Parker completing the Horwich turn out.

Murder Mile 27th August

Murder Mile 27th August

After an absence of some 8 years the Murder Mile has returned to Horwichs race programme with a different course to before, up to the top of Winter Hill from the bottom of the ramp. A total climb of 500 foot making it a tough race.

There where 23 starters with Juniors and Seniors racing together for the first time along with friends from Chorley, Bolton, and Lostock. As expected England International Chris Farrell won by 20 seconds from Nick Leigh with Chris Essex Crosby third 90 seconds adrift. An exceptional run by junior Cian Healy saw him finish fourth overall only one second behind third with Nathan Lancaster 7th 9 seconds behind and Toby Midddleton fresh from winning a 5K in Vancouver third one minute further behind. First Lady was England International Lindsey Brindle despite going over on her ankle with Erica Booth second just getting the better of first Lady Vet Sandra Kelly by six seconds. The first junior girl was Freya Whittle in 18th with Milly Lever runner up in that category after a hard fought race. A special mention to 8 year old Theo Middleton who completed the race in just over 16 minutes and his father Jason getting back in the racing mode after open heart surgery. Well done to the both of them.

Millbrook Monster 10k and Junior Monster 4k

A small group of athletes from Horwich RMI travelled to Stalybridge to take part in these two tough trail races with over 220 runners in the Senior race and were rewarded with some exceptional results.

Andy Ford finished in 14th place in 42.13 an improvement by almost two minutes from last year. A few runners went off course and where disqualified. In the veteran category Tony Hesketh won the O/65 category beating all the O/60 category too in 44th place in 49.19.

In the junior race again some juniors went off course but nevertheless Horwich still had some prize winners. 10 year old Cian Healy who is in good form at the moment finished second only 6 seconds behind the winner from East Cheshire Harriers and Nathan Lancaster and Toby Middleton finished 8th and 9th after going off course when lying 5th and 6th.
