Sportshall – 27.02.11

Young Horwich RMI Harrier athlete, Declan Snape, helped the Lancashire Under 15 Boys Team to victory in the Sportshall Athletics North West Championships held at Wigan. Competing were teams full of talented athletes from Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Cumbria. Declan tied in 2nd place in the under 15 overall athlete of the competition. He will now represent Lancashire in the UK National Sportshall Finals to be held in April at the NEC Arena, Birmingham.

Horwich RMI Harriers also had 5 other young athletes representing Lancashire on the day. In the Under 13 Girls, Martha Gill performed well in the High Jump finishing 2nd, along with Ellie Dacre who also finished 2nd in the Speed Bounce. Lucy Keating ran fantastic in the relays. The Under 13 Girls from Lancashire finished in 3rd place

In the Under 13 Boys, James Lovell ran and jumped well to earn some hard fought medals on the day, whilst Jonathan Powis ran a great 6 Lap race and jumped well in the Standing Triple Jump.

English XC, Alton Towers – 19.02.11

Mud, mud and more mud! By the time our boys were ready to run the organizers had to abandon part of the 3k course on health and safety grounds and the race was changed to a 2k x 1.5k.

As it was, some of the marshals hadn’t been notified of the changes and this then resulted in the race being unintentionally raced too short…… some runners looking around bewildered as to why they had only done 1k and not 2k; others only too happy to have only run 1k under these extremely slippery conditions.

For Horwich RMI our well traveled U13 boys team was unfortunately unable to claim a team position due to Jonathan Powis having being sick just days before. Nevertheless on the hills of Staffordshire in cold conditions our lads went off. Nathan Townsend home in 135th, Cameron Critchley having the race of his season in 168th and Will Townsend home in 224th.

The race was well over 300 strong so well done to the lads.

A mention for Gary Priestley who seemed to be our only senior runner today. Gary did extremely well under the conditions and came home in a respectable 220th out of 1302 runners.

Horwich RMI U13 Boys in Mid Lancs XC @ Blackpool

On the morning after the night before the Boys U13s team went up to Blackpool to see what they could achieve in the Mid Lancs series. The Flat course @ Lawsons Ground

was to be the 4th race in the series and the U13 Boys were the only junior Horwich runners out for a result.

First home was Nathan Townsend home in 10th, Jonathan Powis having another good outing home in 13th and the race of the day Will Townsend having a seasons best home in 17th. All 3 boys looking forward to the National XC race @ Alton Towers next weekend.

Horwich RMI Harriers U13 Boys RED ROSE presentation night.

Last  Friday night the U13 boys were presented with the Red Rose trophy for 2nd Team place for the 2nd year running. Last year was a delight, but to have done it again shows the teams determination to go out in all weathers and compete for the club at a competitive level.

It took 5 boys in total to achieve the shield as harsh snow conditions had prevented some races being run. Nevertheless the last in the series @ Blackburn was a do or die and praise goes to the parents of the lads to have got them there.

The team of Nathan Townsend, Callum Richardson Will Townsend, Jonathan Powis & Cameron Critchley were presented with their shields. As individuals Nathan managed 3rd and Jonathan in 4th overall.

Sportshall Champions from Horwich RMI Harriers & AC

Congratulations to the Under 11 Boys from Horwich RMI Harriers who finished as Lancashire Sportshall Champions for the first time ever. Sunday 13th February at Blackpool Sports Centre saw the final league meeting of the season and Horwich were led magnificently by both William Hart and Matthew Stocks, who scored 16.5 and 18.5 points respectively. William excelled in the 3 lap race and Matthew won the sitting ball throw. Other great performances came from Callum Gordon who scored 10.5 points and came second in the standing long jump. James Keating threw well in the soft javelin and Mackenzie Dacre continues to improve in the 3 lap race. Sam Hart and Stephen Brown also performed well on the day. In the Under 11 Girls section Isobel Dean threw well to win the Soft Javelin, whilst Madeleine Littlewood, Katie Shingler and Helena Norris all ran well to score some valuable points for the team. Lauren Dixon and Eleanor Hall continue to improve, whilst there was a great debut for Esmee Critchley. Performance of the day and probably of the season came in the Under 13 boys. This was the amazing new Lancashire Record in the 6 lap time trial from Horwich’s James Lovell, who ran in a time of 1m18.40s (smashing the previous record of 1m 20.0s). In the Under 13 Girls, Ellie Dacre won the speed bounce with 81 in 30 seconds and Lucy Keating ran well on the day and led the relay team to a fine 2nd place. Overall in the 2010/2011 season, Horwich RMI Harriers came 3rd in the Lancashire Sportshall League. Thanks to all that took part and helped out on the meetings.

Sports City Manchester 19th December

A small number of athletes ventured out in the snow to compete at the indoor open meeting in Manchester. Andrew Storey, Jack Thomas, Hannah Storey and Noah Saunders managed to cover all the age groups; each performing well.

A first taste of indoor competition saw Andrew give a very creditable performance of 64.91s in the 400m and a realisation of how hard the indoor track is.

Jack powered through his 60m race with a new PB of 7.20 seconds; also setting a new Club Record in the process!

Hannah produced a good performance in her 60m event setting a time of 8.38s, just outside her PB of 8.27s.

Noah’s return to the track after a year beset by injuries saw him bring his PB down to 8.54s from his previous 8.75s.

Well done to all and great to see Horwich represented at these fixtures as always.

More indoor events are scheduled at Sports City before the end of February 2011 so check out the fixture list for when to attend.

21 young Horwich RMI Harriers Athletes turned out to compete in the final outside Track and Field Athletics Meeting of 2010. On a sunny day, there were many “shining” performances from the Harriers, including some excellent debut performances.

One of the races of the day was  the 800m heat of the Under 11 Girls, in which Katie Shingler raced with Shannon McClarence and Helena Norris. A great debut performance was made by Declan Snape in the under 15 boys 100m with a time of 12.5s, plus a good 200m run with 25.5s.

James Lovell in the Under 13 Boys won Gold in the Long Jump with a magnificent leap of 4.36m.

Top of the League for the Track & Field team!

The young athletes ranging (Under 13 to 17 years of age) from Horwich RMI Harriers & AC have produced a magnificent result by finishing top of the league in the Division 1 North West of the National Young Athletics League 2010.

Horwich were crowned Champions after their fantastic efforts at the final athletics match held at Mount Stadium, South Sheffield on Sunday 18th July 2010. Horwich finished with 2222 points ahead of 8 other North West teams with their nearest rivals Lancaster & Morecambe, who finished second with 1929 points.

45 athletes turned up for the meeting, together with great support from the parents and helpers. There were many new personal bests, plus a few new club records and Grade 1 achievements. Some of the highlights included Grade 1 standards by Sam Mercer in the under 15 boys, who ran a blistering 400m with a time of 53.30s and Sophie Williams in the under 13 girls with a Shot Putt of 8.34m.

New Club Records were also achieved in the under 13 girls 1200m by Phoebe Howe with 4m03.4s and under 13 boys 1500m by Nathan Townsend with 5m00.2s.

Amy Phillpotts ran well in the under 17 girls 300m in 44.90s and has notably competed in virtually all of the young athlete league matches since 2004, which is a tremendous achievement. There was a Club record in the under 15 Boys 4 x 400m relay with a time of 4m24.50s ran by Joseph Howe, Luke Murphy, Oliver Bretherton and Sam Mercer.

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC now look forward to 2011 for their first time competing in the Premiership of the Young Athletes League.
