Harriers 9th @ Northern Cross

Saturday 25th January 2014
Knowsley Safari Park

Mud, gusting winds, and torrential downpours – and that was just around the tents before the race. (*must wear wellies next time) The race was certainly going to be a muddy affair on a good undulating course, and 12k to run, it was a day for the strong runners. The men’s race was 3 laps of every type of mud on the menu : sloppy mud, sticky mud, deep sucking mud, wet puddly mud, uphill mud and downhill mud. (The only good running was a couple of bits of woodchip)

As is usually the case the start was crazy. 600 plus runners toed the 100 meter wide line, among them a tremendous turnout of 10 Horwich RMI Harriers, waiting for the starters gun. On the gun began the mad dash for the 10 meter wide gap only a couple of hundred meters away up a bit of a (did I mention muddy) hill. Everybody goes off too fast, and only a few minutes into the race you are gasping for air and trying to settle down to a more realistic pace.

Chris Farrell and James Kevan made the strongest start for the harriers. Chris had a fantastic run to finish 34th in his first Northern Cross Country. James was next to finish for the harriers in 62nd. Anywhere in the top 100 is an excellent result at this level, so very well done to Chris and James.

In the team race it’s 6 to count for the senior men, and the next 4 for the harriers had a close race, pushing each other along, (not literally) and battling each other throughout. (Non contact) Next in was Alastair Murray, happy to turn the tables on some club mates from previous results (woohoo) and feeling strong. Dave Jackson finished a massive 40 seconds behind Alastair (big grin) adding another great run to recent form. Dave was closely followed by Jonathan Bruton, valiantly running despite a week off nursing a sore achilles, and putting in a fabulous effort for the team. (What a guy) Jonathan just got the better of Dave Milliken in the finally sprint for the line. This completed the 6 that would land Horwich 9th team in the Northern Athletics Cross Country Championship 2014, our best result for many years. (Yeah!)

The first 6 were ably supported by runs from Andy Townsend, Karl Ward, Danny Kevan and Pete Ramsdale, (Well done lads) and from the course side by Aga Kevan, Pete Keven and Pete Bland. (That I noticed)

In the ladies race we sadly only had one counter but non the less Debbie Campbell had a great run finishing 65th. (I’ve got your Helly and hat)

Earlier on in the day in the U17 boys, Nathan Townsend finished 39th in his first year at this age group. Watch this space.

What a great day out for the club (big thanks to Capt. Peter Ramsdale) and another great result in 2014. Next stop, the Witton Park Relays on Sunday 2nd February. See you there.

This years Norman Matthews Winter Hill Fell Race takes place
on the 12th February this year and the race depends upon

Many people within the club put a great deal of effort into
organising and catering for not just the races, but relay teams,

Beginners Road Group Track Sessions

Beginner Road Group

Track Sessions

Dates – 20th Sept, 4th and 18th Oct, 1st and 15th Nov, 6th and 20th Dec

For Bolton Arena you need to go to the athletics track at the back of the Arena; this is accessible through gates around the side of the Arena building and there is a pathway directly behind the Arena that leads down to the track; you should be able to follow the flood lights that are around the track.

There is a £2 charge per session that covers the cost of track hire; which you pay on the track itself and not at reception – there is a hut next to the track that has a signing in sheet and money box – please sign in as you arrive so that we do not have to chase for payment at the end of the session.

There are changing rooms available within the Arena if you wish to use them; enter through the main entrance, and go down the corridor to the left hand side and you will see Outdoor changing rooms along that corridor; continue down the corridor and there is an exit to the rear of the Arena to get to the track.

Car parking at the Arena is normally quite busy and you are probably best going to the right hand side of the Arena building where there is usually an overflow cark park opened on land between the Arena and the Police Station; the gate at the side of the Arena is normally unlocked, and you usually don’t have to walk around through the front of the Arena to get to the track.

Track Etiquate – this is common sense stuff, but there will be two or three other groups who use the track at the same time as we do, and so watch out for other runners if you cross the track, and only use the lanes that we have been assigned to.

87th Annual Horwich AGM

87th Annual Horwich AGM

18th October 2011 Arena 8pm

Below is the agenda for the AGM but I would like to bring to you attention the positions of Vice Chairman, Treasurer and two ordinary committee members that are vacant on the 2011-12 committee.  To continue to allow the club to function as smoothly as possible we would like to fill the positions.  You need not have experience of anything special just an interest in helping your running club.  The treasurer’s position does not require a certified accountant, just someone who can add up and do the occasional subtraction – bit simplified but there are people who will help you get settled.  The two ordinary members do not need attend all committee meetings, but feel that they would like to help in some small way. Think about it.

World Mountain running Championship

World Mountain running Championship

Tirana Albania

James Kevan competed in the World Mountain running Championship in Tirana Albania, The elite mountain runners from across the world were treated to an insight into the culture of Albania and the impressive landscapes it has to offer, which included having the highest average altitude in Europe- perhaps a perfect fitting for the sport of mountain running! Race day saw the full demands of Mountain Running on display as many struggled in the hot and humid conditions on a varied and technically demanding course.

The Senior Men’s Race was ran over a distance 13.1km with 750m ascent/descent

James was representing Ireland for the second consecutive year. Temperatures on the course were in the mid-30s, much of the course was run through a building site covered in toxic cement dust, and there was a steep dangerous descent at the top of the course. These hazards led to a busy first aid tent. The large senior men field hurtled down the steep descent raising a dust storm. The Irish team finished in ninth which is the highest placing since the early 1990s. James was 57th out of 116 runners.

Photos of James in the world champ race last Sunday. James is number 56.

Coope’s Dozen

Coope’s Dozen

This is an 18 mile round of twelve local tops that has in the past been completed in 2 hours 35 minutes.  For many years (not 2010) it has been undertaken as a social run on the Saturday before the Borrowdale Race.  Saturday 30th July 2011 will see this informal event resurrected.  The usual format is that there is a fast group and a slow group, plus perhaps a few “racers” who hope to be back for an early lunch (not provided).
If you fancy turning out be at the Top Barn, ready to run for 9:00 a.m. and expect to be out for anything up to 5 hours.  If you want more details get in touch with me on 01257 480026 or
The event is unsupported, so unless you stash refeshments on the route (Hordern Stoops is about half way) you’ll need to carry your own stuff.  I usually undertake the sweeper role to ensure no-one gets left behind.

Adrian Selby’s brothers charity Iron Man

Adrian Selby

Last month a very close friend of mine and long time member of Horwich RMI Harriers Adrian Selby sadly passed away after a long illness.

During his 16 years as a member of the Harriers I was team captain and Adrian ran for me in many of the relays and always seemed to get it just right on the day, he was always one of my first selections and from memory he never had a bad run, he was a class act and his style made it look so easy for him but I am sure it wasn’t.  He had a wicked sense of humour and would always be on top form at the relays keeping us entertained, my favourite races were always the 6 and 12 stage relays and it was lads like Adie that made it so worthwhile for me.

Adrians mum and dad Mike and Irene have written to me to say it was a great comfort to them to see so many Harriers attending the funeral service, they say that Adrian always spoke highly of the spirit and friendship of the Horwich RMI members.

Adrians brother Martin and Adrians brother in law Tony have both entered this months UK Ironman Triathlon which is on the 31st July in Bolton, they have entered the race to raise money for the 2 main charities that helped and supported Adrian and his family with support and care over the last few months of his life. Thurs 21st July Hill session

Change of training venue for the 21st July Thursday Hills session

Thursday 21st July This will now start from the rough car park on the Left hand side of the road coming out of Belmont towards Rivington just past the Blue Lagoon (Click here for a map).
I intend to train on the long hill on the back of Winter Hill not the ramp.  This is a better hill to train on as it offers a more varied terrain.

After the session why not meet up in the Black Dog in Belmont for a quick pint and a collective chat about our running.  All will be welcome

Sweatshop Chorley Park 4.4 Trail Race

Sweatshop Chorley Park 4.4 Trail Race

Wednesday 6th July 2011

Three harriers turned out for the third in this years Chorley Park 4.4 Trail series, with the weather barely holding off and a light but warm drizzle towards the end, a respectable 95 runners turned out for the race.

Our first counter, Katie Ingram had a strong run, winning 1st lady and coming 2nd overall with an impressive time of 24:53; which I believe is the fastest ladies time for the new Chorley 4.4 course, a record which I also believe was set when Katie last ran the course.

Paul Boardman came in 14th place with a time of 28:13 despite struggling with an injury right now, and Carl Balshaw followed up in 28th place, and also a picking up a PB.

2 Katie Ingram 24:53
14 Paul Boardman 28:13
28 Carl Balshaw 30:17

Northern 6 stage – Ladies

Hi Ladies

The Northern 6 stage relays are on Sunday 20th March in Catterick and we are hoping to get a team out. Details of the relays can be found here.

Please don’t be put off if you haven’t been racing or your not as fit as you would like to be. There are plenty of races over the next four weeks and the track sessions on a Tuesday night at Bolton arena are still very popular. If your looking for something low key (and free!) then there’s now a park run event in Leverhulme park every Saturday morning at 9.00am, you just need to register once and you can turn up at any of the venues on any Saturday morning. Details of the park run events can be found here.

Other races coming up are the Standish Hall trail race on the 19th February, the Central Lancashire 5K in Bolton on February 20th (which is also the first counter in the Central Lancs Grand Prix) and the Lostock 6M on the 27th February.

Please let me know if you are interested in the relays, even if it’s just a maybe.
