Greater Manchester Sportshall League

Greater Manchester Sportshall League

Well Done to All Our Athletes that Competed in the Greater Manchester Sportshall Event – October 21st 2012

On the 21st October Sportcity Manchester hosted the first of three Greater Manchester County League Sportshall Competitions. This was the first time that Horwich RMI Harriers and AC had participated in this League having traditionally been entered into the Lancashire League Sportshall events at Blackpool. Although venturing into un-familiar territory the athletes that competed for Horwich by no means appeared as novices. There were some excellent performances from our athletes against some very stiff and experienced competition from clubs such as Dash AC, Bolton AC, Wigan and Sale Harriers.

Worthy of note in particular were performances by Horwich Athletes:

Niamh Bowen (U11 Girls): 1 lap – 3rd (11.58 secs), 3 lap – 2nd (36.20 secs).

Katie Shingler (U13 Girls): 2 lap – 3rd (22.00 secs), 4 lap – 1st (47.19 secs), St Long Jump – 4th (1.96m)

Ella Harper (U13 Girls): 4 lap – 2nd (47.39 secs).

Isobel Dean (U13 Girls): 6 lap – 3rd (80.70 secs).

Katie Shingler, Ella Harper, Isobel Dean and Helena Norris (U13 Girls): 4x2Lap Relay – 3rd (90.91 secs).

Ellie Dacre (U15 Girls): 2 lap – 4th (22.36 secs).

Issac Parker (U11 Boys): 3 lap – 2nd (35.93 secs).

Owen Cole (U13 Boys): 2 lap – 4th (22.35 secs), 4 lap – 4th (47.81 secs), St Triple Jump – 3rd (5.68 secs).

In addition, for their contribution to the overall team performance and for proudly representing Horwich RMI and AC, many thanks to: Sally Caldwell, Annabel Flanagan, Richard Flanagan, Daniel Kay, Callum Mewes, Luke Bellew, Jack Aspinall and Mackenzie Dacre.

Details of all results can be viewed at: http://www.sportshall.org/VTL/Results_County_2012-13.aspx

Sportshall League is an excellent competition for our athletes to participate in during the winter months. It gives them a chance to compete in a fun event in a top quality sporting facility against athletes from the some of the best clubs in the County. It also gives them an opportunity to record their own personal best performances for future goal setting and progression.

If you are a Horwich RMI Harriers athlete aged U11, U13, U15 at 31st August 2012 and would like to be considered for the team for the next two Sportshall League Events, to be held at Sportcity on the 18th November and 9th December, then there is still an opportunity to register. Just download and complete the attached form and submit to Rachel Collington (club nights Monday and Wednesday) along with a cheque for £4.50 made out to Greater Manchester Sportshall League. Forms and monies should be received by no later than Wednesday 7th November.

Note: The cost for all three events is £4.50 in total. There is no reduction for participation in less than three League events.

Fleming Trophy 2012

Fleming Trophy 2012

31 youngsters took part in the 2012 Fleming Trophy Handicap Race on Wednesday 1st August. Tony and Brenda Hesketh took on the task of organising the annual event on a normal junior training night from the Arena.  This is an unprecedented number of juniors and with more notice and pre-entries I sure there will be more in this event next year.

The one and a half mile route, marshalled by senior members, parents and helpers was from the Arena around to the Royal Mail sorting office and back.  With the ‘speedy’ juniors setting off nearly 10 minutes after the first runners, everyone had a chance to compete for this historical trophy.  First home was Anna Walton in a time of 12.14 with Jasmine Gower second in 13.54 and first boy, third overall was Robert Seddon in 13.58.

Fastest male was Joseph Howe of Blackburn Harriers in 7.58 with sister Phoebe also of Blackburn in 8.48.

The trophies on the evening were presented by a previous Fleming Trophy winner and current Fielden Cup holder Steven Diaz.

Thanks to all coaches, parents and helpers who enabled the event to be enjoyed by so many youngsters.

Northern Track & Field League Carlisle May 2012

Horwich RMI Harriers Match Report:

North of England Athletics Association Track and Field League Division 4WC: Match 2 @ Sheepmount Stadium, Carlisle.

On Saturday 26th May, the Horwich RMI Harriers Senior Track and Field team travelled to Sheepmount Stadium, Carlisle, to compete in the second fixture of the North of England  Athletics League. In glorious sunshine, the team of 13 athletes secured a well deserved third place, thanks to a fantastic effort from each and every person who made the trip, especially those athletes who “took one for the team” and competed outside their comfort zone in events they don’t usually think about trying!

There were some exceptional performances that helped to secure the result, including Noah Saunders taking on the senior athletes at the tender age of 14 in both the men’s 100m and 200m, Rachel Collington running a season’s best in the women’s 200m, and the relay teams who ran both a 4×100 and 4×400.

Some new club records were also established, with Amy Phillpotts throwing a new PB and Under 20’s record in the Javelin, and Kelly Laughton jumping another Senior Ladies record in the Long Jump. Both were involved, along with Lyndsey Jones and Tiffany Dacre, as a new Senior 4x100m record was set in a commanding win for the ladies team.

In the men’s events, Mike Houghton extended his Senior Long Jump record, and set a new overall club record in the Shot Put.

A fantastic result for the team on the day, and all are looking forward to the next meeting at Wigan on July 1st. With this being the home fixture, we need as much support on the day as possible, so anyone who is available to offer their services would be most welcome.

Results including known record changes (CR = Club Record, xR = Age Group Record) and Seasons and Personal Best’s (SB/PB) are shown below.

Well Done!

Xmas Heptathlon Mon 5th Dec 2011

Xmas Heptathlon Mon 5th Dec 2011

(6-8pm followed by Presentation in Cafe)

Our 6th Annual Sponsored Xmas Heptathlon takes place – indoors on Monday 5th December 2011. It takes place from 6.00pm sharp! It’s a team event and a great evening. All that take part will receive something on the night!

All members are welcome to take part – it’s a great FUN event, where all the athletes have to complete 7 events in 2 hours!

The event is FREE and we just ask that if you can, please raise some money for a very special charity, which this year would be raising money for “Donna and Bolton Hospice”.

Donna, age 43, (who used to be one of the Harriers in her younger days) is also the mum of one of our young athletes, but very sadly, Donna has a terminal illness. There was an article in the Bolton News on Wed 16/11 about Donna and her family and her wishes. We feel it would be great to support Donna and her family this year.

In the past 4 years our young athletes have raised over £ 2,000 for local charities in this event, which is fantastic.

This event is open to the younger athletes from school years of 3 to 10 – we will select the Captains for the night. There will be seven teams with Reindeer names on the night and again we will select who goes in which team etc! Last year we had over 60 enter, so please let me know by e-mail preferably, if you are able to make it? It will be like a little Xmas party!

After the competition, we will go to the Arena Cafe for light refreshments mainly for the kids (all FREE), there may be the bar open too for us older ones!! (This is not free!). There will be a small presentation to the team winners and Captain of the team etc.

Once again, special thanks goes to the HORWICH ROTARY who have very generously provided the trophies, prizes and the food and drink for our young athletes on this night.

If anyone has any younger brothers/sisters who are not yet members, but are old enough to take part, just let me know and we will see what we can do?

HELPERS for the event – please let me know if any of you are able to help out on the night to judge, officiate and mark the scores etc. We will show everyone what to do, so don’t worry!

Hope to see you all there! Don’t forget your Xmas hats!

Kind regards

Quadkids Competition – Greater Manchester Athletics Networks

Quadkids Competition
Greater Manchester Athletics Networks

On Sunday 25th September 2011, Horwich RMI Harriers & AC entered 2 teams, Horwich Lions (Under 11’s) and Horwich Tigers (Under 9’s) in the first ever GM Athletics Network Quadkids Competition.

Held at Winton, Eccles, Manchester, the event attracted 16 teams from the Greater Manchester area containing 160 young athletes. There were 10 members in each team, 5 girls and 5 boys. Each athlete had to complete a short sprint, a middle distance race, standing long jump and then throwing the “Howler”.

The Horwich Lions (U11’s) were led magnificently by their Team Leader, Zac Howe. The Lions finished as Runners-up in their age category, which was fantastic.

Not to be undone were the Horwich Tigers (U9’s), with their Team Leader, Tiffany Dacre helping them to finish in an excellent 3rd place overall. The Tigers also finished in 1st place in the Shuttle Relay in a very exciting race!

Individual honours went to Jack Shingler, who came in 3rd place overall for the Under 9 Boys and Ella Harper who came 3rd overall in the Under 11 Girls age category. Congratulations to both these young athletes and to all who took part. All the Coaches and parents were very proud of the athletes.

In the Under 11 Girls section Isobel Dean threw well to win the Soft Javelin, whilst Madeleine Littlewood, Katie Shingler and Helena Norris all ran well to score some valuable points for the team. Lauren Dixon and Eleanor Hall continue to improve, whilst there was a great debut for Esmee Critchley. Performance of the day and probably of the season came in the Under 13 boys. This was the amazing new Lancashire Record in the 6 lap time trial from Horwich’s James Lovell, who ran in a time of 1m18.40s (smashing the previous record of 1m 20.0s). In the Under 13 Girls, Ellie Dacre won the speed bounce with 81 in 30 seconds and Lucy Keating ran well on the day and led the relay team to a fine 2nd place. Overall in the 2010/2011 season, Horwich RMI Harriers came 3rd in the Lancashire Sportshall League. Thanks to all that took part and helped out on the meetings.

Sports City Manchester 19th December

A small number of athletes ventured out in the snow to compete at the indoor open meeting in Manchester. Andrew Storey, Jack Thomas, Hannah Storey and Noah Saunders managed to cover all the age groups; each performing well.

A first taste of indoor competition saw Andrew give a very creditable performance of 64.91s in the 400m and a realisation of how hard the indoor track is.

Jack powered through his 60m race with a new PB of 7.20 seconds; also setting a new Club Record in the process!

Hannah produced a good performance in her 60m event setting a time of 8.38s, just outside her PB of 8.27s.

Noah’s return to the track after a year beset by injuries saw him bring his PB down to 8.54s from his previous 8.75s.

Well done to all and great to see Horwich represented at these fixtures as always.

More indoor events are scheduled at Sports City before the end of February 2011 so check out the fixture list for when to attend.

Track and Field Athletics Open Meeting at Blackpoo

21 young Horwich RMI Harriers Athletes turned out to compete in the final outside Track and Field Athletics Meeting of 2010. On a sunny day, there were many “shining” performances from the Harriers, including some excellent debut performances.

One of the races of the day was  the 800m heat of the Under 11 Girls, in which Katie Shingler raced with Shannon McClarence and Helena Norris. A thrilling and tough finish occurred with Katie just pipping Shannon to first place. In the 80m Sprint, Shannon managed to get her revenge and beat Katie in a very hard fought sprint.

A great debut performance was made by Declan Snape in the under 15 boys 100m with a time of 12.5s, plus a good 200m run with 25.5s.

James Lovell in the Under 13 Boys won Gold in the Long Jump with a magnificent leap of 4.36m.

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC

27/09/2010

Top of the League for the Track & Field team!

The young athletes ranging (Under 13 to 17 years of age) from Horwich RMI Harriers & AC have produced a magnificent result by finishing top of the league in the Division 1 North West of the National Young Athletics League 2010.

Horwich were crowned Champions after their fantastic efforts at the final athletics match held at Mount Stadium, South Sheffield on Sunday 18th July 2010. Horwich finished with 2222 points ahead of 8 other North West teams with their nearest rivals Lancaster & Morecambe, who finished second with 1929 points.

This now means Horwich RMI Harriers will be promoted to the highest level attainable in the National Young Athletes League in 2011 i.e. the Northern Premiership West, which will include top clubs like Sale Harriers Manchester, Liverpool Harriers, Blackpool and Preston etc.

45 athletes turned up for the meeting, together with great support from the parents and helpers. There were many new personal bests, plus a few new club records and Grade 1 achievements. Some of the highlights included Grade 1 standards by Sam Mercer in the under 15 boys, who ran a blistering 400m with a time of 53.30s and Sophie Williams in the under 13 girls with a Shot Putt of 8.34m.

New Club Records were also achieved in the under 13 girls 1200m by Phoebe Howe with 4m03.4s and under 13 boys 1500m by Nathan Townsend with 5m00.2s.

Amy Phillpotts ran well in the under 17 girls 300m in 44.90s and has notably competed in virtually all of the young athlete league matches since 2004, which is a tremendous achievement. There was a Club record in the under 15 Boys 4 x 400m relay with a time of 4m24.50s ran by Joseph Howe, Luke Murphy, Oliver Bretherton and Sam Mercer.

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC now look forward to 2011 for their first time competing in the Premiership of the Young Athletes League. Horwich are always on the look out for new volunteer coaches and with the prospect of  this challenge next year, please contact the web-site contact details if interested.
