Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 9th – Sunday 10th June 2010.

Running the length of Wales – 200+ miles over 2 days, 20 stages, starting at Caernarfon Castle on Saturday morning, with an overnight halt at Newtown and finishing on Sunday afternoon at Cardiff Castle.

This year will see the 30th running of the Welsh Castles Relay. To mark this milestone we would like to take a team back to this race which was a popular annual outing for the harriers back in the 80s, where the club finished 2nd overall twice.

We wouldn’t be trying to win the overall race but aim to win some stages and possibly King of the Mountains. Cost £5.00 per runner. As well as runners we would need a small team of people to help with the organisation.

We need to know before this weekend if there is enough interest so we can enter a team.

If you are interested in running, or to be part of the organising team please contact Steve Pearson as soon as possible.

Horwich Ladies take Ribble 10k team prize

Horwich Ladies take Ribble 10k team prize

On a perfect day for running in the picturesque Ribble Valley , 3 good solid performances by the Horwich RMI ladies team took the team prize in this high quality race of almost 1000 runners. The team was led home by Rachel Thompson in a brilliant time of 36.48 closely followed by an ever improving Debbie Campbell in 38.04. Gemma Jones was our third counter not far behind in a gutsy 41.03. Well done ladies.

In what was one of the most high quality mens races I have seen for a while Gary Priestley ran a brilliant 31.37 and the ever improving Andy Townsend ran 36.34. Gary will now go into the Nos Galan 5k on New years eve with enough confidence to run a PB, good luck Gary

Windmill 10K on Sunday 13 November

Windmill 10K on Sunday 13 November

Six members of the Beginners Road Group  represented Horwich RMI Harriers, along with Paul Muller, at the Windmill 10K on Sunday 13 November at a very pleasant Lytham St Annes. A fast and flat course gave good opportunity for some PBs and we managed to achieve 4 between us, as well as firsts in the M V50, F V55 and F V60 categories, so a very successful outing! We went prepared for an icy blast off the Atlantic, but it was exceptionally mild and the layers were thrown off early along the course to our patient support driver. A very well organised, supported and attended event and one to look out for again next year to knock some more chunks off the PBs.

5th, Paul Muller, 36:06 – 1st V50

178th, Gill Smith, 51:26 – 1st FV60

198th, Alexandra Else, 52:18 – 10k PB

233rd, Anna Keightley, 54:12 – 10k PB

273rd, Julie Williamson, 56:31 – 10k PB

324th, Marion Tracey, 59:54 – 1st FV55- 10k PB

Gin Pit 5 – 2nd October 2011

Gin Pit 5

2nd October 2011

Gin Pit 5

Nine Harriers turned out for the Gin Pit 5, the last of the Central Lancs Grand Prix races, and despite a little drizzle earlier in the day, the weather held for the fun run, and then the main 5 mile race at 11am.

Congratulations to James Kevan led from the start to win for a convincing win in 25:56, a margin of over a minute and a half ahead of Lewis Eccleston in 2nd place; Gareth Booth finished in 27:38 to take third place.  This was Jame’s 6th outing in the Central Lancs Grand Prix and 6th outright win, which should therefore make him the overall winner, and today’s 3rd place should give Garth 2nd place overall in the Central Lancs Grand Prix, though we are waiting for the official final results to be produced.

David Jackson was our third finisher in 8th place to make up the team and take the team prize, narrowly beating the Astley and Tyldesley team by just 3 places. In the Clubs Road Championship, this will take David’s score to 190pts, retaking first place in the men’s overall positioning. Sean McMyler finished as the fourth Harrier and continues a busy race season, taking him to 188pts and 2nd place position in the club’s road championship for this year.

Danny Kevan, Carl Balshaw, Gordon Stone, Lawrence Pinnell, and Hazel Banks finished in good times, and well done to Hazel as this will leave her in first place for the clubs lady road championship this year.

Finally, thanks to Astley and Tyldesley for what was as always a well organised and enjoyable trail run.

The full line up for Harriers were as follows

1st James Kevan 25:56
3rd Gareth Booth 27:38
8th David Jackson 29:09
13th Sean McMyler 29:45

Langdale Half and Full Marathon 2011

24th September 2011

Garstang Half Marathon

Three harriers competed in the Garstang Half Marathon on Sunday. Good conditions for the race albeit with one section of flooded road to traverse just before nine miles. The “undulating” course determined challenging times with Paul Muller first harrier, 4th overall and first vet (and so 1st V50) in 1:21:17 whilst Philip Eccleston finished an excellent 22nd in 1:28:54 and V55, Gordon Stone, 112th of the 189 finishers in 1:51:20. The race was won by Accrington’s Shaun Livesey in 1:17:41 and Southport’s Amanda Crook took the ladies’ honours in 1:26:19.

Derwentwater Trail Race 3rd Sept

This trail race attracted a large field of over 300 runners on a very wet day with rain constant throughout the race. The race was won by ex Horwich runner Russell Madams of Keswick. First for us with a splendid run was Rachel Thompson in 22nd place and third lady and she felt that another mile would have caught the second lady. Our first male finisher was Phil Eccleston 46th a good run by a consistent runner, Tony Hesketh was less than a minute behind winning the first O/60 Category. More over sixties followed with Pete Heneghan 216th, Alan Blinkhorn 250th and Barry Tyson 272nd who all ran well in the conditions.

Ultrafit St Anne’s 10 Mile

3 Horwich runners made the trip to St Annes for this super flat but tough course. The first five miles were against the wind with Anthony Ford setting the pace from the off and never troubled throughout.  Martyn Bell and Paul Muller settled into a small group of six for the first 5 miles to reach the Windmill (half way point) in 29 minutes 20 seconds with Sean McMyler in close contention and within a minute of this pace. Negative splits were achieved in the final 5 miles for all 3 Harriers.

Weekend Roundup 12th/13th March 2011

Mid Lancs XC
Just four seniors ran in the final race of the cross country season at Beacon Park. Alastair Murray was first harrier home in 20th.

Roddlesworth Roller

Seven harriers ran this local, undulating trail race. First harrier home was Rob Jackson in 3rd position and 1st Vet 45. Good to see Lindsay Brindle back racing and running well in 5th position.

St Annes Half Marathon

Paul Muller was the outright winner with Mark Gibson finishing in 16th.

Haworth Hobble – 33 miles 4400ft

Three harriers completed the Haworth Hobble with Albert Sunter finishing in 57th.

Spenborough  20

Two harriers Sean McMyler and Martyn Bell made the trip over the Pennines, to be greeted with rain and low temperatures, which thankfully cleared to provide almost perfect running weather 20 minutes into the race. Whilst this race never produces super fast times due to the sustained undulations (over 1500ft of climb), Sean McMyler  using his vast distance running experience to pace himself perfectly to take a fine win within the M45 category. This bolds well for Sean’s preparations for this years London Marathon.

Trimpell 20

Only one harrier, Gareth Booth made the short journey to Lancaster to run in this ever popular race. 388 hardy distance runners set out on a cold yet extremely flat course, with 12 runners beating the 2 hour mark and Gareth finishing in 2hours 3 minutes 32 secs.  Running strong all the way, this was an important dress rehearsal for the London Marathon in which Gareth is focused and well capable of holding sub 6 minute miles for the full distance in what will be his 3rd marathon.
