“Fellraisers”

“Fellraisers” is the latest offering from our very own Fellephant aka Mark Birbeck.

An introduction from Mark :-

Hello,

This is my latest fell running film called Fellraisers. Its been filmed in 1080 HD.

The inspiration for this film came directly from injury. My thought during injury was to make a film which represented the way I felt during that period. Notably the speed in which races come and go when I cant enter them.

The footage was filmed in 2012\2013 over the period of a year in Wales and England. I think I had two days where it didn’t rain during filming. It was a nightmare, but ultimately worth it because of the type of footage I acquired.

The race footage in the film comes from y Moelwyn, Ovenden, Barbondale, Great Lakes, Scafell Pike, Great Whernside, Foel Fras, Walsh Two Lads, Paddy’s Pole, Borrowdale, Crowhill Reverse, Blisco Dash and Belmont Winter Hill.

So here it is, an off the wall take on fell running accompanied by my own music.

I hope in some way you like the film.

felly.

Junior Pike Thanks

Junior Pike Thanks

Having sent the final award in the post this afternoon and completed a financial statement – what’s next? Oh yes my thanks to all the very capable team that helped Horwich RMI Harriers put on 5 individual English Championship fell races at Rivington on Saturday.

The day started early with Ali Murray and myself walking senior and junior routes clearing any hard ice on the route and erecting signage. Registration, for what was going to be a busy session, was manned by Trevor Williams and Alison Gordon. They were efficient from the gun with numbers, race fees, pins, routes and questions. To make sure the little runners went the right way and turned at the right places, a team of well drilled marshals managed the races. Andy Townsend, Christa Whatmough, Kath Swindell, Pete Gillham (Chorley), Gordon Stone and Christine Ramsdale performed their duties admirably.

Next we needed to make sure the results were right – so myself, Suzanne Budgett and Jim Goodwin (Rossendale) created finishing funnel and completed the job. Trevor and Alison worked out the names of the first three in each race and presentations were possible during the Under 16’s race. It all worked like a dream – a dream team – Thanks everyone. Nearly 300 juniors in 6 races.

A special thanks to Suzanne for taking over timing duties from me during the under 16’s race allowing me to change my shoes and enter and run my 20th pike race

Many thanks to the FRA for their support beforehand, Pete Bland Sports for their sponsorship and Sweatshop for their support too. Must mention the Bolton Mountain Rescue whose contribution is always welcome. Thanks to all the parents for their support in looking after their children.

Peter Ramsdale

Pike Race Thanks

Pike Race Thanks

Just a short note to say a big thank you to all those who helped make the Senior Pike Race happen this year (I’m sure Pete will be along in a minute to thank those involved in the mammoth effort required to organise 5 junior FRA champs races – well done Chairman)

Being dropped into the middle of it I have appreciated the amount of work put in by many people to ensure this appears (from the outside at least) to go smoothly on the day. That’s many hours work put in over the months before hand by Pete Bland, Pete Ramsdale and Colin Jones. Thanks guys.

The team on the day helped execute their plans. A combination of people who volunteered in advance, the night before, and crucially those that turned up on spec just in case I needed a hand.

Thanks to Sue Townsend (and mum) Anna Keightley, Julie Bower (fantastic registration team), Colin Waterworth (jack of all trades), Andy Townsend, Lawrence Pinnell, Liz Sykes, Trevor Fishwick, Paul Jackson (road closure team), Dave Jackson (road signs man), Steve Thomasson, Stephen Diaz, Nina ?(sorry!), Paul Edmondson, Stuart Edmondson, Andy Porter, Maria Lowe, Sean McMyler, Caroline Brown, Mark Gibson (marshals), Mark Swindell, Kath Swindell, Christa Whatmough, Stewart Westhead, Phil Fleming, Martyn Bell and Gemma Stokes (start / finish team).

Well done all!

Ali.

Rivington Pike Race

Rivington Pike Race 30th March

Our annual Pike Race attracted a large field of over 300 runners and was very well organised by Pete Ramsdale and his team. With the added strain of our junior races being in the English Junior Fell Championship this year the races went like clock work. Tom Cornthwaite won for the second year in a row from Gary Priesley who used to run for us. First finisher for us in 18th place was Dave Milliken after a strong race backed up by Gareth Booth and Rob Jackson doing his 30 th pike race in succession was good enough to win the Team prize. Our first lady was Lindsey Brindle 6th and 80th overall after a good race making up places on the descent. Michael Crook and Paul Murray where first o/65 and o/70 respectively.

Witton Weekend

Witton Weekend

Horwich perform at the highest level

Horwich RMI Harriers turned out in quality and quantity for the first ever Blackburn Fell and Trail relay last Saturday. Each team of three had the same 5k leg with a climb of 300m on the hill of Witton Park.

Horwich turned out 12 teams in the main race with Alastair Murray, James Kevan and Martyn Bell completing the course to win the race by nearly three minutes from the host clubs A team. On leg one Alastair Murray came back in 4th place in 21.38 handing over for James Kevan to move the team through to first place with a run of 21.57 and Martyn Bell increased the lead on leg three with a run of 22.28. The total time was 1:06:01 with Blackburn Harriers in second place in 1:08:59 and Blackburn Vets in third in 1:09:03. In 8th place was the second Horwich team in 1:13:21 (individual results at the end of the report).

Third Horwich team in 12th place was called ‘The Young Ones’ and included 15 year old Nathan Townsend and Dad Andy with Sean McMyler completing the trio. Nathan had the fastest junior run of the day completing the course in a very good time of 25.18. ‘The Young Ones’ had a time of 1:13:56.

Horwich also had teams in 15th, 31st, 36th first Horwich ladies team in 1:20:59, 37th second Horwich ladies team just six seconds behind in 1:21:05 and 38th, 42nd, 60th, 71st – three junior girls and 80th.

The junior event run on a shorter course had three Horwich teams completing. First home and in 8th place overall and third under 12 boys team was the first of the Horwich teams with the second Horwich team in 17th and the first Horwich girls team was 20th overall.

With 15 teams from Horwich out for the day it really show the quality and commitment of the club as we move into the new year.

Ashurst Beacon Fell Race 9.5 k 250m 12th January 2013

A cold but dry day wellcomed over 150 runners for this local fell race with the course very muddy in places times were generally slower than in previous years. Tim Ellis of Calder Valley won easily by over a minute leading from gun to tape. First home for us in a fine 6th place with a good run after a long lay off was Alastair Murray. Glynn Kay was close behind in 8th and his brother Michael took a number of scalps in 27th with a well judged race. Paul Boardman was only 3 seconds behind Mick but was disappointed with his race. In the vets Tony Hesketh was second o/60 in 42nd place with Mike Crook going one better winning the o/65 category in 84th another runner returning after a long lay off.

Overall Tables

Overall Tables

The Overall Club Champs Tables are now up to date.

http://www.horwichrmiharriers.co.uk/articles/?page_id=3273

Apologies for the delay this year in the updating of all the tables. It appears there was some confusion over who was maintaining them this year.

Many thanks for the hard work of Karen Murray over the last few days in bringing all the tables up to date.

Withins Skyline

Withins Skyline

Three HRMI Harriers ran this rather muddy & boggy fell race, but what fantastic weather graced us. Lindsey Brindle’s first race in months saw her fair quite well finishing pretty well up in the field. Great to see her back in the fold. Fingers crossed, no repercussions! Next was Brent Brindle trying not to let Suzanne take up the bet of ‘if I beat you, there’s a curry in it’ followed by loser of curry Suzanne. A great time in the pub after hosted by Dave & Eileen Woodhead with fab prizes all round.

Bronze for Horwich

UKA British Fell & Hill Relay Championship – 14-Oct-2012.

Church Stretton.

A fantastic performance by the MV40 team saw them take bronze at this years FRA relays on the Long Mynd.

Gareth Booth got the team off to a great start on the solo leg 1 of 6.7k 500m climb, handing over to Martyn Bell and Dave Milliken for the pairs leg over 13k and 900m of climb. Martyn and Dave took the team into third place in the MV40 category, and it was nip and tuck for the rest of the race. On the navigation leg it was down to Brendan Bolland and Mick Green to keep us in the running, which they did well, coming back just a few seconds down on third place. Dave Jackson had the glory leg, another solo leg of 7.1k and 500m ascent, conclusively restoring the team to 3rd place, and securing the bronze medal.

FRA Vets Bronze Team

We also had an open team running on the day. Tony Hesketh got us started, handing over to Gary Chadderton and Doug Fleming. Reluctantly Alastair Murray and Mark Fuller took over for the nav leg, with Stuart Edmondson returning to racing on leg 4. The team was very happy with 58th position.

Big thanks to all who helped put the teams together, and to Tony Hesketh, Mark Fuller and Stuart Edmondson for stepping in at the last minute to run.

IHMR

A fantastic day in the Lakes was the reward for the eight Horwich Harriers who made up the team for this years running of the Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay.

Kicking us off, in a hastily rearranged running order were the two Micks, Kay and Green, getting the team off to a fantastic start and handing over to Brendan Bolland and the ‘just in time arriving’ Alastair Murray for leg two. The unchanged pair of Chris Heys and Phil Dewhurst took over for the not so long, but tough leg three, passing the baton to Andy Porter and the ‘thought he was spending the day potholing at 8 o’clock that morning’ Colin Jones, to finish us off.

Despite all the moaning by the team captain, it was a grand day out. A big thanks to the whole team for pulling together when it seemed the team was in jeopardy, and in particular to Colin Jones for dropping everything as a last minute (well quite a bit after the last minute) replacement.

Thanks to everyone who turned out, and to David Jackson and Steve Pearson for helping out with marshalling and timekeeping. The weather held off and everyone avoided the worst of the bogs, although it was fairly dark by the time I set off.

Some requests for drier conditions next year, some requests for it to be run entirely in the dark. It depends largely on whether I remember before the nights get too dark.

Grizedale Adventure Challenge

I’m racing with a team from work doing the Grizedale Adventure Challenge in Cumbria, this Saturday, 24th, it’s a 2km trail run/25ish km MTB around the North Face trail (red) followed by 4km fell run, an incidental kayak, another 4km fell run followed by an assault course. Last year we came 3rd without trying to hard and one of the team members got cramp. One the team members, the who got cramp, has pulled put has damaged wrist and will struggle on bike section. Does anyone fancy doing it to make a team of 3? We can give a lift up to Grizedale if needed.
