Kentmere Horseshoe 11.9m 3,300′ climb – 25.07.10

We were blessed with a dry day for this event, despite all the previous rainy days we’ve experienced of late. Considering this, the conditions underfoot were very good, although not quite as dry as they have been in previous years, making the running pretty good going. Decent visibility seemed to favour the runners too, which again was a bonus. Five Harriers turned up for this race on a rather muggy, close day; Mick Green (1.49.43), Albert Sunter (1.55.18), Suzanne Budgett (2.05.27), Tony Varley (2.15.28) & Mark Salmon (2.43.34). After speaking to all fellow Harriers, it would appear that we all enjoyed the course (and it is a good, pleasant & runnable course). Vet category prizes were collected by Albert, Tony & Suzanne.

Cross Keys Relays – Vets

SAT.SEP 4th. CROSS KEYS ROAD AND FELL RELAY (R). 1.00 p.m. 2x3m road plus 2×2.5m fell from the Cross Keys Inn, Uppermill, Saddleworth (GR SE008062). £10 per team of 4 on day. PM. Over 16. Junior teams (U18) need signed consent of parent/guardian. FULL KIT/EQUIPMENT must be brought to event. Kit check at start. Website:

Each road leg does two laps of a fairly hilly course – Starts at the cross keys pub, goes down past the Church Inn then up towards running hill pits, descends back to the cross keys then round again. Not an official measurment but looking at memory map about 140m of climb over the 3 miles – The fell leg goes from the keys up over Rocher Brow, descends almost to the A635 heads north for a short distance before heading back over the brow to the Keys. Again not an official measurement, but I make it to be about 230m of climb over the 2.5miles.
We already have 1 vets team sorted and entries will be taken on the day.
Any interest please contact Martyn Bell ( )

Top of the League for the Track & Field team!

The young athletes ranging (Under 13 to 17 years of age) from Horwich RMI Harriers & AC have produced a magnificent result by finishing top of the league in the Division 1 North West of the National Young Athletics League 2010.

Horwich were crowned Champions after their fantastic efforts at the final athletics match held at Mount Stadium, South Sheffield on Sunday 18th July 2010. Horwich finished with 2222 points ahead of 8 other North West teams with their nearest rivals Lancaster & Morecambe, who finished second with 1929 points.

This now means Horwich RMI Harriers will be promoted to the highest level attainable in the National Young Athletes League in 2011 i.e. the Northern Premiership West, which will include top clubs like Sale Harriers Manchester, Liverpool Harriers, Blackpool and Preston etc.

45 athletes turned up for the meeting, together with great support from the parents and helpers. There were many new personal bests, plus a few new club records and Grade 1 achievements. Some of the highlights included Grade 1 standards by Sam Mercer in the under 15 boys, who ran a blistering 400m with a time of 53.30s and Sophie Williams in the under 13 girls with a Shot Putt of 8.34m.

New Club Records were also achieved in the under 13 girls 1200m by Phoebe Howe with 4m03.4s and under 13 boys 1500m by Nathan Townsend with 5m00.2s.

Amy Phillpotts ran well in the under 17 girls 300m in 44.90s and has notably competed in virtually all of the young athlete league matches since 2004, which is a tremendous achievement. There was a Club record in the under 15 Boys 4 x 400m relay with a time of 4m24.50s ran by Joseph Howe, Luke Murphy, Oliver Bretherton and Sam Mercer.

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC now look forward to 2011 for their first time competing in the Premiership of the Young Athletes League. Horwich are always on the look out for new volunteer coaches and with the prospect of  this challenge next year, please contact the web-site contact details if interested.

Jubilee : Race 3

Wednesday 21st July 2010

There was a gap in the weather, and the last race of this years three race series was run in near perfect conditions. It was also a counter in the Central Lancs Grand Prix, so there were a good number of runners from local clubs.

It was a fast race up front with Ben Fish from Blackburn, and Matt Barnes from Altrincham clear of the field from early in the race, with Ben winning in a fantastic 24:27. First home for Horwich and continue his excellent form was Richard Howarth in 3rd with a time of 26:27. This solid performance secured Richard first place in this years series. Completing the winning mens team were Steve Nolan in 10th, Gareth Booth in 13th and Andy Townsend in 23rd. Pete Bland was first V60.

Full results can be found here.

Don’t forget there is no Jubilee next month. Instead the Fielden Cup will be run on the third Wednesday of August – details here.

Wasdale Fell Race

Saturday 10th July 2010

The conditions were once again testing for this ultimate fell racing test over 21 miles and 9000 feet of climb on the Lakeland fells around Wasdale, with some of the heaviest rain of the year, and low cloud making navigation difficult.

Only one Harrier completed the course this year with Mick Green finishing 30th overall and 3rd v45 in a time of 5:28:21.

Blackburn 5k

Sunday 11th July 2010

Cool and blustery conditions met the runners at the Blackburn 5k which started and finished at Witton Park. The race incorporated the North of England championships and the England Athletic championships plus a number of international teams were present.

The standard was very high with 29 men under 15 minutes and 3 ladies under 16 minutes.

The three Horwich representatives were pleased with their performances. Gareth booth was first back in a rapid 15.40 after starting quickly and maintaining the pace. Russell Maddams made the trip from Cumbria and chased Gareth all the way and was rewarded with a time of 15.43. Excellent running for an ultra distance runner! Third Horwich counter was Alastair Murray, narrowly missing the sub 16 minute barrier but happy to be back racing after a recent break with illness.

The team did extremely well finishing 5th in the Northern championships and 6th in the English championships.

Horwich Juniors “UP ONLY” Arnison Crag @ Patterdale. Lake District.

Another superb day welcomed the Junior Fell runners @ Patterdale in the Lake District for the 4th round of the English Fell Championships.

First up, Zac Howe running magnificently up the Crag to finish a thoroughly deserved 9th in the U16’s. This brings Zac to 4th in the Championship title race so far.

In the U14’s we had another great race from Joseph Howe up in 8th and Sam Bromley up in 11th. Jonathan Powis making it up in 14th, all doing brilliant in their first U14’s agegroup.

The U12’s performed just as well. Nathan Townsend up in 4th, Phoebe Howe 2nd girl, Cameron Critchley once again strong in being the 7th boy and a storming finish from Will Townsend being 9th boy.

In the U10’s Lauren Fairhurst enjoyed her run with a well deserved finish, our only runner.

The day was as expected, hard, but all agreed well worth it, when a lot of other runners just cannot cope with this very hard up hill run, well done to all juniors.

This Week’s Hill Session

This week we will be doing a figure of 8 loop on top of the Pike.
