Harrock Hill

Wednesday 25th August 2010

A total of 169 runners turned out for this the last in the series. The start was delayed due to the amount of extra ‘entries on the night’ turning up. There were quite a few from our Club namely (off memory & in no particular order) Tony Hesketh, Petes’ Bland & Ramsdale, Doug Fleming, Pauls’ Muller & Boardman, Brendan Bolland, Emma Perrin & Suzanne Budgett (sorry if I’ve missed you off – its an age related memory thing and you’ll be there one day!). We picked up mens team prize plus several vets prizes which consisted of the usual excellent array of fruit & veg. Not too sure of all finishing positions as no results to hand but can confirm that Emma Perrin took some catching & held her position with a great uphill sprint finish.

This Weeks Hill Session

No decision on what session we are doing this week but we will be going off road whatever the weather to make the most of the last few light evenings. Off-road shoes recommended.

Meet as usual at the bottom of Foxholes and Factory Hill from 6:30 on Thursday evening.

REMINDER : There will be no Hill Session on Thursday 9th September, so why not come and do the Downhill Race instead.

Fielden Cup

Wednesday 18th August

Neil Pendlebury and Gordon Stone were the only 2 runners who bothered to turn up for our most prestigious intra club race of the year. Pete Ramsdale and Ali Murray both turned up to help with the organisation but decided to run so we ran the race with 4 runners and 7 marshalls, thanks to Pete Kevan, James Kevan and Aga, Simon Parkinson and his wife and Carl Balshaw for helping.

The Fielden Cup dates back to 1890 and Horwich runners have been competing since that date to have their names engraved on it. I have personally organised it for 18 years and this is the biggest snub that I have ever encountered, sometimes I wonder why I bother.

Anyway – thanks to everybody who did turn up, and thanks to everybody who took the trouble to let me know they were unavailable to run.

Well done to Gordon who ran really well to win for the second time in succession.

Position Name Handicap Clock Time actual Time
1 Gordon Stone 00.00 14.08 14.08
2 Pete Ramsdale 00.00 14.12 14.12
3 Ali Murray 02.35 14.12 11.37
4 Neil Pendlebury 03.15 14.30 11.15

Darwen Gala Fell Race

3.7m 390’

Saturday August 21st 2010

This race was a Lancashire County Championship race for the juniors & it was good to see so many youngsters out. The 16 & 18 year olds were run with the seniors making quite a large field of a 100+ runners. In the main race there were five representatives from Horwich four of whom were vets & one youngster, Zachary Howe (M16). Paul Boardman led the way in fine style closely followed by young Zachary Howe. A little further down the field was Steve Kenyon, Doug Fleming & finally Suzanne Budgett. All survived to tell their tale but probably suffered the odd little ache a day or so later.

Oswaldtwistle 6 mile Trail Race

A small, low-key race which I believe has been resurrected over a new course. In hindsight, road shoes would have been more than adequate if you didn’t mind a few mud-splashes. Well organised by Lee Pasco with a junior race beforehand. About 45 in total participated with Suzanne Budgett finishing 12th overall and first female. The race was garmin’d at 5.61 miles. An out & back route with a couple of laps to start off around a field and allotment lanes. This made it interesting enough to do as a one-off race.

Llanberis Trial

Sunday 8th August 2010

Despite only returning to running a few weeks ago after a long layoff with a stress fracture, Gary Priestley ran the GB trial race for this years World Mountain Running Champs at Llanberis.

The uphill only course followed the Ranger Path to the top of Garnedd Ugain for a total of 6.8 miles and 3563 feet of climb.

No doubt Gary would have been disappointed with his 26th position in a field of top fell, mountain and road runners, but off so little training this promises much more for the future.
