Berlin Marathon 26th September 2010

Well done to Simon Parkinson for his excellent result at the Berlin Marathon.

‘I finished the Berlin Marathon in 2 hours 51 minutes and 33 seconds. Well under the 3 hours that I wanted to do so am absolutely over the moon. Ran really well and looking at my split times I was consistent from start to finish even though I did start to feel it in the legs about 38K. Fantastic event and would recommend to any Harrier wanting to do one of the marathon ‘majors’. It is a flat fast course and great atmosphere all the way around. Good organisation too(would we expect anything less from the Germans!). It rained all day with cool temperatures so felt just like home!

Having a well deserved rest for a few days but will be back for the Gin Pit.’

Scafell Pike Fell Race

(AS 4.5m/3000′)

25th Sep 2010

Paulo Campos reports….clear blue skies and sunshine greeted all the runners and one horwich harrier (moi!) for this year’s race. The route began at wasdale head with a flatish stretch before eventually leading to a steep climb up lingmell and a short traverse to the summit and the turnaround! An initial cautious descent off the top was followed by a quick run all the way back down to wasdale head. Looking back at previous results, there never seems to be a big turnout for what is a cracking race, just as well perhaps as Wasdale already sees far to many visitors already. As a first fell race I was happy with my result, however not so happy with two mammoth great blisters under both heels (new shoes!).

Cross Country Entries Reminder

All entries for 2010/2011 cross country season need to be with Pete Ramsdale by this Friday (1st October). Please get your entries to him asap using the form which can be downloaded from the cross country section on our website.

Ladies, please, please try to do at least the Red Rose League. You are all needed. Whatever your current level of fitness you WILL make a difference by turning out for the Club. If you can also do the Mid-Lancs League then we can support the men & vice versa. It’s £6.00 for 10 races. Bargain! It’s great winter training & will give you a good base for next year. I’m entering both Leagues and will be happy to car share.

Many thanks for your support

Suzanne

Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay

Owing to access issues at Kirkstone the Ian Hodgson Mountain relay will now start at 9.30am PROMPT, half an hour earlier than usual and we cannot afford to wait for late teams.

We will also be introducing a parking permit system at Kirkstone with one permit per team (i.e. teams with three entries will only get 1 permit).

Any cars not displaying the permit will be turned away from the car park and the lay-by adjacent to the pub.

Many Thanks

Chris Speight

Blackpool Open Meeting 26th September

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC

Track and Field Athletics Open Meeting at Blackpoo

21 young Horwich RMI Harriers Athletes turned out to compete in the final outside Track and Field Athletics Meeting of 2010. On a sunny day, there were many “shining” performances from the Harriers, including some excellent debut performances.

One of the races of the day was  the 800m heat of the Under 11 Girls, in which Katie Shingler raced with Shannon McClarence and Helena Norris. A thrilling and tough finish occurred with Katie just pipping Shannon to first place. In the 80m Sprint, Shannon managed to get her revenge and beat Katie in a very hard fought sprint.

A great debut performance was made by Declan Snape in the under 15 boys 100m with a time of 12.5s, plus a good 200m run with 25.5s.

James Lovell in the Under 13 Boys won Gold in the Long Jump with a magnificent leap of 4.36m.

Parc Bryn Bach Triathlon

19th September 2010

Katie Ingram just missed out on the medals after finishing 4th at the final race in the British Triathlon super series. Former world champion Helen Jenkins took the glory after making the break on the run from world class triathletes Jodie Stimpson and and Kerry Lang.

Katie had a strong swim despite the chilly conditions but unfortunately a received a 15 second penalty for not putting on her helmet quick enough. Katie then managed to pull back a few positions on the bike before storming through to 4th place on the second lap on the run. Da iawn Katie!

The race also incorporated the British Championships. We were visiting family in South Wales and it was a good race to watch just 5 minutes from my parents home. Unfortunately we couldn’t stay to watch the Brownlee brothers battle it due to the long trip home.

World Mountain Running Champs 2010

James Kevan competed for Ireland in the World Mountain Running Championships on the 5th September 2010 in Kamnik, Slovenia.

James qualified following the selection race in Djouce in the Wicklow Mountains Ireland in August when he finished 5th overall.

The World Championship race was held in the beautiful mountains of Slovenia, it was an uphill only race finishing at the top of Gradisce which is 1668m high on the Velika Planina. It was a very tough 12km climb. James enjoyed the experience and hopes to compete in the Worlds next year in Albania which will be an up and downhill race and also the European Championships in Turkey.  James finished 126th which is not bad in the world.

I don’t think that many athletes can have competed for two countries.

I have attached a couple of pictures of James taken during and after the world championship race.

Cross Country Fixtures 2010/2011

This coming seasons’ cross country fixtures are now out.  Listed below are the fixtures for the Red Rose, Mid-Lancs & South East Lancs leagues.  These are & also listed under our cross country section.  The Club has in previous years aimed to target both the Mid-Lancs & Red Rose Leagues.  Whilst this is still very much encouraged it would be great if we could see all our ladies out in force targeting at least the Red Rose League.  The fixtures are all local and the ladies can dominate this league providing we all turn out.  However fit or unfit you feel you can still make a difference for the team by just by turning out.  Its the numbers that count!  Entires will still be co-ordinated through Pete Ramsdale.  In the meantime, if you have any queries contact Pete Ramsdale or myself.
