Liver Hill Fell Race

Liver Hill Fell Race 29th March 2011

The mid week races began on Tuesday night with the Liver Hill fell race, which starts at Marl Pitts and covers 5 miles and 800 feet of climb. Three harriers were in attendance with Paul Boardman finishing in 26th position. John Parker continued his good form and was the first vet 70 to finish and was closely followed by Ed Swift.

Reminder : Radcliffe 10K 3rd April

Hey up folks

The Radcliffe 10k trail race on Sunday 3rd April is the next race in our Club Championship and the Central Lancs Grand Prix, Please let me know if you intend to race as we need a really good turnout, we had a good turnout last year and I think everybody really enjoyed the race, it is a mixture of road and good paths. If you are doing London this would be a good last blast before you ease off.

It is also the first race in the club overall championships.

Cheers for now

9th Great Grizedale Trail

9th Great Grizedale Trail – 27th March 2011

A beautiful afternoon bestowed approx 300 runners on this increasingly popular 10 mile trail race run on the tracks through Grizedale Forest. Six Harriers participated consisting of Paul’s Boardman & Murray, Fran Walker, Suzanne Budgett & twin sisters Mary White & Margaret Huyton (who incidentally brought along sibling younger twin sisters Joan & Anne). We had pretty much near perfect running conditions – not too hot, not too cold & not too much breeze. Margaret & Mary made this a true family affair & all sisters ran round together enjoying the moment & catching up en route. Not the usual terrain to spy Paul Murray on but nonetheless he had quite a flyer leaving a large part of the field in his wake. Fran Walker had a good run too, still in her first year of running will reap the rewards of her training & continue to improve. Paul Boardman was first Harrier home & both Suzanne & Mary picked up prizes.

Calderdale Way Relay May 8th 2011

Club Members,

The Calderdale Way Relay is usually held in December but was cancelled last year due to the weather. It has been rescheduled for Sunday 8th May.

There was a fantastic response last time and the club would have been extremely competitive in each category.

We have three teams entered so if you want to run, or think you might want to run please let Steve Pearson or Simon Parkinson know asap for the mens and vets team, and Suzanne Budgett know for the ladies team.

This is a great event and an opportunity for all runners in the club to take part. Don’t miss out on this unique chance to run a fell relay during the summer instead of the winter!

Please don’t wait to be asked to run, let us know asap.

Look forward to all your responses.

Ultrafit St Anne’s 10 Mile

3 Horwich runners made the trip to St Annes for this super flat but tough course. The first five miles were against the wind with Anthony Ford setting the pace from the off and never troubled throughout.  Martyn Bell and Paul Muller settled into a small group of six for the first 5 miles to reach the Windmill (half way point) in 29 minutes 20 seconds with Sean McMyler in close contention and within a minute of this pace. Negative splits were achieved in the final 5 miles for all 3 Harriers.

Weekend Roundup 12th/13th March 2011

Mid Lancs XC
Just four seniors ran in the final race of the cross country season at Beacon Park. Alastair Murray was first harrier home in 20th.

Roddlesworth Roller

Seven harriers ran this local, undulating trail race. First harrier home was Rob Jackson in 3rd position and 1st Vet 45. Good to see Lindsay Brindle back racing and running well in 5th position.

St Annes Half Marathon

Paul Muller was the outright winner with Mark Gibson finishing in 16th.

Haworth Hobble – 33 miles 4400ft

Three harriers completed the Haworth Hobble with Albert Sunter finishing in 57th.

Spenborough  20

Two harriers Sean McMyler and Martyn Bell made the trip over the Pennines, to be greeted with rain and low temperatures, which thankfully cleared to provide almost perfect running weather 20 minutes into the race. Whilst this race never produces super fast times due to the sustained undulations (over 1500ft of climb), Sean McMyler  using his vast distance running experience to pace himself perfectly to take a fine win within the M45 category. This bolds well for Sean’s preparations for this years London Marathon.

Trimpell 20

Only one harrier, Gareth Booth made the short journey to Lancaster to run in this ever popular race. 388 hardy distance runners set out on a cold yet extremely flat course, with 12 runners beating the 2 hour mark and Gareth finishing in 2hours 3 minutes 32 secs.  Running strong all the way, this was an important dress rehearsal for the London Marathon in which Gareth is focused and well capable of holding sub 6 minute miles for the full distance in what will be his 3rd marathon.

Black Combe

5th / 6th March 2011.

Three Harriers opted for a race in the Lakes this last weekend at the ever popular Black Combe fell race, with new member Fran Walker just getting the better of Rachel Metcalfe for the ladies, and Ray Miller representing the men.

On Sunday Colin Jones was racing again in the Kendal Winter League finishing 24th in the Cautley Spout race.

Long Mynd Valleys – English Championships Race 1

The first race of this year’s English Fell Championship was held on the 6th March in Church Stretton. Twelve harriers made the long drive to be met with a tough course of 11.5 miles and 4500ft of climb. First harrier home was Alastair Murray in 47th position and was satisfied considering a series of mishaps which resulted in arriving last at the car park for the race. Next harrier home was Mick Green, followed by Karl Ward, Simon Parkinson and Gary Chadderton, completing the mens team. The ladies fielded a team too with Geraldine Walkington leading the way ahead of Mary White and Margaret Huyton. Well done to everyone who ran.

Full results and lots of photo’s can be found here.

Duddon Valley entries are now open and will probably fill up quickly so get your entry in. The next race is Mearley Clough on the 14th May, entries open on the 15th March.

Weekend Roundup 26th/27th February 2011

Lostock 6

5M Road & Trail Race, Littleborough

Two Harriers entered this race, with Rob Jackson winning outright with a comfortable lead, followed by Paul Boardman finishing in 7th.

22nd Great North West Half Marathon, Blackpool

Four harriers ran in blustery conditions with Paul Muller finishing in 13th position.

Noonstones Fell race

Pete and Rob Haworth both ran with Pete finishing in 32nd and Rob in 43rd.
