Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon 23rd May

Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon 23rd May

Excellent conditions greeted the the capacity field for this years Duathlon held in Rivington and which consists of two 5K runs either side of a 21K cycle section.

Last years winner and course record holder Tom Carson led from the gun with relay team runner Karl Dracy finishing the first run together. The cycle section saw Tom lose his lead to Mark Russell of Swinton by just six seconds. Mark had the third fastest bike split but on the final run was overtaken and was eleven seconds adrift at the finish. Dave Jackson of Horwich had a brilliant race never outside the top four. He ran strongly on the final leg to finish well clear in third place.

Other notable performances came from Paul Massey of Horwich with two top ten runs and this was enough for tenth place. Tom Lucas was fourteenth another athlete in fine form and the Horwich contingent was completed by Barry Allman in 82nd place.

The Ladies race was never in doubt with Bolton’s Catherine O’Dwyer winning by over eleven minutes and finishing 22nd place overall.

Fielden Cup 2015

Fielden Cup 2015

The annual running of the Fielden Cup this year had one of its smallest fields which was, to say the least, a little disappointing. The race over a 2.2 mile course on George’s Lane is based on a handicap which this year was calculated by Pete Ramsdale. In the end the four runners had just 44 seconds between first to go and last to go and then battle it out over what was a windy Thursday night race. First off Gordon Stone, at 22 seconds Geoff Leech and last year’s winner Steve Thomasson and then at 44 seconds Paul Lewis. At the turn around point Steve had almost caught Gordon with Paul catching the field. As the race covered the final steps Paul edged in front of Gordon to hold on for a 5 second victory with Steve a further 17 seconds back in third and after a blistering start (which in hind sight was a bad idea) Geoff completed the course just 1 minute behind the winner.

Then back to the Jolly Crofters for presentation, photographs and refreshments. Thanks to Mark Burbeck for the marshalling, Christa and Duncan for support. Maybe next year for everyone else? See you then.

Pos Name Clock Time Handicap Real Time

1 Paul Lewis 16.25 0.44 15.41

2 Gordon Stone 16.30 0.00 16.30

3 Steve Thomasson 16.47 0.22 16.25

4 Geoff Leech 17.25 0.22 17.03

With both Jubilee and Two Lads races coming up, it’s time again for everyone to muck in and help out our fantastic club race organisers.

If the leafy environs of Rivington Village and the reservoirs are your thing, please contact Andy Townsend to help out at the Junior Street series starting on the 20th May. This is a 1 mile event for ages 7 to 16. So come and help out the next generation of local athletes.

If your preference is for hanging around the bogs and moorland of Winter Hill, please contact Colin Jones to help out at the Two Lads Fell race on 11th June at 7.30 pm.

If you’re an especially good egg, why not help out at both, and enjoy two lovely spring evenings in our local countryside, without all the effort and sweating of actually running.

Within this session you will have the benefit of learning what constitutes weight training for running and be able to practice some moves on the night! Correct technique will promote all the benefits and avoid injury! We can also arrange for a follow up session perhaps 6-8 weeks later to answer any specific questions that you may have experienced in your own sessions.

If this is of interest then please let me know on FB or by email your intentions…….this is not just for the elite but open to ALL interested parties……ie: the girls and in particular the vets who need to understand that S&C is a crucial part of your training program !

PS i would expect all our northern relay squad to be in attendance with the exception of Ian Conroy for obvious reasons.
