Standish Hall Trail Race – Sat 28th Feb

A rather deceptively tough 10k trail race which was made all the more difficult if the wrong shoes were worn! The terrain was very mixed with a section of open field quickly followed by a long climb which had to be run twice, this seemed to sap the strength of most of the field, with the possible exception of the first lady Lauren Howarth, who at just 18 years old finished 7th overall, which I suppose could be expected from someone who finished 2nd in the National the week previous, just 13 seconds behind Steph Twell!
Our first counter Colin Rigby found the race hard but enjoyed the variety of the course and was pleased with 5th place in 36.45 – and to take the first 0/40. Denis Mason (40.01) was next in 27th place and looked a little tired from all the hard training he has been doing of late, but it will pay dividends soon. Doug Fleming (41.37) and Paul Boardman (41.39) worked hard pushing each other to finish 40th & 41st respectively. Steve Jackson had a super run, coming back into a little form and finishing in 44.57. Pete Bland found his road shoes a handicap – as many others did – but ran strongly for 47.12 finishing well up in his age group. Keith Tyrer gave Pete his usual support, finishing just a second behind him (but we must get him a club vest Pete!) Our only lady entry was Bethan Faulkner who is taking a liking to these longer races, Bethan ran great for 88th overall and a time of 47.19. Barry Allman’s time of 50.39 did not reflect his current form, with Barry having to take a mid race pit stop.
