The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon (SLMM)

Weekend: 4th/5th July

The SLMM is a two-day mountain navigation event. Teams are given grid references and have to navigate between set checkpoints.
The 31st Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon started from Coniston and headed over the fells to a mid-camp in the Duddon Valley. Despite a few showers, the weather was generally dry with the cloud clear of the tops. There were fantastic views from many of the Lakeland Mountains, if you managed to look around instead of at the map or your feet. Several members of Horwich participated in the event. Mark Seddon gained an excellent result, finishing 3rd overall and first vet in the Klets class (the longest and only solo class of the event). I partnered my sister (Ruth Metcalfe) in the Bowfell class, a class higher than we usually do, and successfully finished 20th team overall and took the first ladies’ team prize. Margaret Huyton and Alan Huyton, gained a very respectable position of 52nd out of 103 finishers in the Carrock Fell class. I know other Horwich members took part, and I can only apologise for not managing to locate your names on the results.
It was a very tiring but enjoyable weekend.

Rachel.
