Dennis Weir’s dog

Dennis Weir’s dog

Received by Club Sec – Alison Gordon.

Dear Alison,

This morning on a short walk I met, separately, Christa Whatmough, Brent Brindle and Dave Massey. They all expressed pleasure that my dog had been found. Dave had just been looking for him on 2 Lads. He and Christa said they had learned he was missing through the Club, and Dave said lots of Members had searched for him.

Can I express gratitude to all these people?

The dog was missing for nearly 2 weeks, and was found at Delamere, in Cheshire(!) I was reunited with him yesterday.

If members see any posters that I have failed to recover, please would they remove them and dispose of them?

Many Thanks.

Best Wishes,

Dennis

Red Rose XC – Chorley

Red Rose XC – Chorley

8th November 2014 – a Saturday.

Having spent most of Thursday and Friday in intensive recovery mode, and having been offered a lift, I ended up doing the weekends cross country race. It must have been fate!

I’ve grown accustomed to a certain standard of vehicle when offered a lift by Jacko, so how could I refuse? Nicely upholstered electric seats, air conditioning, and a smooth ride were, however, not features of the two seater builders van. I shouldn’t complain – at least I got a seat. Mr Carson seemed at home, and quite comfortable lying down in the back.

We were welcomed at Astley Park by clearing skies, wet ground, and the welcome shelter of the club tent, manned as always by our very professional XC captain, Pete Ramsdale, who had lost my number. Catering was provided by Brenda Hesketh in the shape of some very popular cakes and toffee, and the Hesketh’s had even provided a smaller tent for the kids, to allow me to prepare for my race without annoyance.

So the scene is set. There were some kids races, and a ladies race apparently. I didn’t see them whilst relaxing in the tent, so hopefully someone else will write about them.

The gun fired.

Jacko had, it would seem, challenged Mr Carson to a race to the first tree. It appeared to be a well fought battle, which according to my sources (DJ), Jacko won narrowly. There was of course another 6 miles to go, and Jacko settled down to a more sensible pacing strategy. However, Mr Carson seemed to continue his fast start, gaining a 40 meter lead by the time he disappeared into the trees, never to be seen again by myself, and not to be passed by anyone until the finish. Jacko continued a well paced race to finish second for Horwich, but slightly disappointed to be out-sprinted by some old guy at the end. (no editorial required) Third for Horwich, and putting down a marker for next week at Barrow, was Dr Lloyd. Jacko will be looking over his shoulder. Probably not for me though. I can only imagine that my race looked like I’d never done a cross country before, and that I was afraid of mud. (I’ll be a V40 soon and it won’t look so bad) Next was Glyn Kay who presumably this time had not been up for 36 hours. Glynne Lever followed in his carefully selected fell shoes, and enjoying his first XC so much that he’s going to do another one! (Madness) Anthony Hesketh was next, narrowly missing out in the V65 classification, followed by Gordon Stone, who had remembered his spikes this time, (wise) and John Parker, who was first V70.

Needless to say, I had a bit of a grump on after the race, and considered spending the rest of the afternoon in quiet contemplation in the club tent, but Mr Ramsdale took it down.

So I went home.

AM.

Horwich Junior XC, Astley Park, Chorley

Horwich Junior XC, Astley Park, Chorley

Horwich Juniors continue their wining steak by taking 3 team First places in the Second round of the Red Rose XC series.

The U11 Boys team managed another 1st Place in this competitive XC series. Leading the team in was Matthew Flatters in 3rd , closely followed by Fell Champion Cian Healy. Toby Middleton was the 3rd counter just in front of Matthew Mair making it 4 runners in the top 8. New member Finley Ried strong in 15th with Isaac Keating best run yet in 17th. Lucas Milliken took 21st and Joe Jacksons outstanding run making 23rd. Callum Mosley having a strong performance in 56th of the 10 runners who have certainly made this the best ever U11’s team. The teams points for the first 3 was 13, second place Leigh only managed 42!

Without being outdone the U11 Girls also showed the boys they could do just as good. Ella Pendlebury taking the lead from the front made the race look easy with her second win of the Series.

Strong finish from Chloe Russle in 8th and Freya Whittle in 17th gave the Girls 1st Team Place Again. Ever Improving Lydia Johnson in 25th, Pip Nuttall 37th, close finishing from Jess Glendenning 58th and Olivia Baker 59th. Milly Lever 66th, Caitlin Nuttall 79th, Ellie Green 83rd, Skye Nicholson 91st and Lucy Seddon 98th

Shepherds Skyline

Shepherds Skyline Fell Races 1st November 2014

Six junior fell runners from Horwich RMI Harriers travelled to Yorkshire to compete in the races in Todmorden. The courses had some tough climbs but remarkably everyone gained a podium position.

In the U/10 race Cian Healy English Fell Champion won after being boxed in at the start but worked his way through the field and with a sprint finish won by 2 seconds from a Clayton runner.

The U/10 girls race saw in form Freya Whittle lead from gun to tape to take a superb victory. Our second counter was the ever improving Lydia Johnson in second place, despite taking a nasty fall on the descent.

In the boys U/8 race Theo Middleton had a good race working his way through the field to finish second.

I the boys U/12 race we had two boys who are on top form at the moment. The brilliant Tom Massey won after leading for most of the race and broke the course record too with team mate Toby Middleton only three seconds behind. He had broken the previous record also.

These were tremendous results by the young Fell Runners of Horwich and bears well for the future.

Mid Lancs XC Hyndburn

Mid Lancs XC Hyndburn

Horwich RMI defended their current title with some vigour against some intense competition. Having 2 club runners on International duties in Italy in was down to some spirited performances to save the day.

From the line Tom Carson took the lead and remained there comfortably until accumulating a good distance and finishing as first counter. Next counter was Joe Mercer a great run in 6th. Dave Jackson was strong and managed 23rd just piping Alastair Murray still coming back from tonsillitis in 28th. New Member Ryan Stevenson put in a great run in 63rd, closely followed by Graham Schofield 65th. Impressive performances where still to come from Chris Essex Crosby just behind in 68th and a very tired Glyn Kay on only 4 hours sleep in 30 from a Holiday in Florida managing 72nd. Other runners who braved the mud also deserve a mention John Parker in 254, Gordon Stone 270 and Peter Scott 273, well done guys.

Horwich are the current Holders of this title and were happy to come away with 4th place in the First of 6 races.

Next Race Barrow In Furness On the 15th Nov is a must for the team to keep up the pressure on retaining the title.

RED ROSE XC summary

Junior Red Rose XC, 1ST, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, they just keep on coming!

The first round of the Red Rose XC took place at Leigh with some outstanding performances.

First race of the day U11 Boys where Horwich took 1st Team title. Nathan Lancaster having the race of his life to come in 1st place with a clear margin over the rest of the field. Matthew Flatters having to take 4th after officials allowing Matthew and a number of leaders to take the wrong way on the course. Matthew was narrowly in FRONT OF Toby Middleton and new member Finley Reid who ran in his first official Horwich Race. Another Star being Matthew Mair again his first official race for Horwich. A reliable Lucas Milliken gave Horwich 6 in the first 10 ten runners, outstanding. Great Runs by Isaac Simmonite, Isaac Keating, Joseph Jackson, Callum Mosley & Joshua Houghton gave Horwich a total of 11 boys running.

Not to be outdone the U11 girls also showed tremendous endurance. Ella Pendlebury taking 1st place is proving to be a rising star within the club. Most races Ella competes in she represents Horwich with great results. Next in for Horwich was Freya Whittle a fantastic 7th place. Chloe Russle having her best result coming in in 12th place giving the girls a fantastic 2nd place out of 13 teams!

Not fazed by this the U13 boys went out for another great result. Lewis Wilkes having a brilliant race came a fantastic 2nd surprising himself as well as his competitors. Remarking afterwards he ran the race as fast as he could for as long as he could, his best result in a XC race. Luke Brindle came in 11th outsprinting much older athletes on the spring to the finish. Their 3rd counter Kieran Kineally in 19th and Robert Seddon 22nd , Jake Glendenning 30th , this gave the boys 3rd in the race. In the U13 Girls our Sole runner Livia Sutcliffe came a respectable 52nd with her return to the racing scene. Another Sole performance was Robert Seddon back to the XC season with a great 30th place.

Harriet Foley in the U15 girls ran extremely well in her first ever XC race with a respectable 19th place. Pleased with her first race of her running career, she promises better results to come. To finish off the juniors it was left to Nathan Townsend to see what he could do to defend his current title. Tactically is went all wrong Nathan said when he made a break for the lead and was obstructed by slower ladies still on their first lap on a single path. There Callum caught him back up, In the end Callum outsprinted Nathan over the last 100m taking 2nd Nathan is already setting his sights on winning the Next round held at Chorley on the 8th Oct. Extremely Pleased Coach Andy Townsend remarked all the hard Summer training has paid off with the Juniors putting in the Best Individual & Team results in the Red Rose from such a small squad of Runners.

Race to Remember

Race to Remember 5 Mile Trail Scorton 28th Sept

This race takes place in a very scenic area in the Trough of Bolland and comes with a real sting in its tail with a very steep climb at 4 miles and is not for the faint hearted. The race was won by SamHarrison of Bowland in 34.51 with our first counter Paul Muller in a brillliant 5th despite a toilet stop and won the O/55 award. I was next in 22nd a minute slower than last year but won the O/65. Brenda Hesketh was 24th lady and was well pleased to complete the race,Gill Smith despite a cold won the FO/60 award and enjoyed the race.

2k Junior Trail Race

We had four juniors competing in this race and all ran excellant races with 10 year old Nathan Lancaster winning outright in 8.57 leading from gun to tape with Cian Healy 23 seconds adrift in second place after a typical gutsy run.For the girls Freya Whittle had a fantstic race fourth overall and first girl despite stopping when a horse darted in front of her. Lydia Johnson had her best run in Horwich colours and was rewarded with a second place and seventh overall

HOSPITAL RUN THURSDAY 18th DECEMBER 2014

The Hospital Run this year will take place on Thursday 18th December 2014 and consist of the normal 10.5 mile route.

For anyone unfamiliar with this traditional club training run it takes a route from Horwich Leisure Centre down to the Crown Hotel and along Chorley New Road to the junction with Chorley Old Road in Bolton, where the former Royal Bolton Hospital used to stand (approx. 5.9 miles). Hence the title Hospital Run. The run to this point is at a very, very steady pace. From here the run starts in earnest and is done at near to race pace along Chorley Old Road to finish back at the Leisure Centre (approx. 4.6 miles).

Again this year there will be four groups starting from the Leisure Centre, at 7.00 p.m. for the slowest group and then at 5 minute intervals with the fastest group setting off at 7.15 p.m. This is to ensure that all runners arrive at the Hospital at about the same time. Only when all runners have assembled at the Hospital will the run for home begin.

Please assemble in the foyer of the Leisure Centre.

Note: Lockers are available in the Leisure Centre, as are showers for a small fee.

Lancaster 5k series, Fast & Furious.

Lancaster 5k series, Fast & Furious.

On Saturday Evening in near perfect conditions up at Lancaster Nathan Townsend decides to go for a quick run out. Many Local runners know the Lancaster 5k is a very quick course. Nobody was prepared for how quick!

Having been injured with a serious sprain since January, Nathans Track season was well and truly trashed with only slow running all year. Under the supervision of Duncan Mason, physio to Mo Farah in major competitions, Duncans recommendations was to give up running any form of competition until Autumn, this was back in March. Depressed was not the word, more Furious and Fed up was the order. Spending time in the gym was the closest Nathan got to breaking out in a sweat. Working on legs and core, 8 min miling on the treadmill was just not productive, or so he thought.

The Last of the Lancaster 5k series was the benchmark of whether or not he was good enough to defend his XC titles over the Winter period. What Nathan needed was someone to take him on, thankfully Matthew Sheen of Vale Royal and James Bowness of Trafford a 1.48 / 800m runner was on hand to push Nathan. Last year Nathan enjoyed a 16:43 on this course and would have settled today for anything around 16:15, and that was very optimistic.

Leading the small field out of the track Nathan was motoring taking the lead with Matthew on his shoulder, Nathan recalls “maybe I’m going too quick”, the first mile cover in less than 5 minutes. It was then James and Matthew turned their experience and Summer training on. Not prepared to go down without a fight Nathan took them on and all 3 were flying. Nathan was now covering 2 miles in 10:12.

Within the last mile James broke away and made some distance between Mathew and Nathan. However it was Nathans track training than came into the fore when finishing, the last 300m seemed to be just like a track session as he closed the gap on Matthew. Finishing 3rd & Recalling his time last year, Nathan could not believe finishing in 15:46, the 4th fastest U17 time in the UK this year.

Afterwards all 3 runner cooling down congratulated each other, as all 3 had knocked around 1 mins off their personal bests.

Nathan at 16 was too young to accept alcohol as a prize so claimed 2 free entries for next years series and a bag of Haribos.

The Moral of the Story! Never Give Up!

Down Hill Race 2014

Down Hill Race 2014

(Apologises for first names only – low key event!)

A very pleasant evening for the annual running of the Down Hill Race starting from Scots Man Stump, visiting the Pike and finally the RMI Club. This event, by the power of the Internet, even caused ‘others’ to enquire about it and turn up to run – fabulous.

Sixteen people selected computer plugs to determine their starting position and this was the first ‘blood pressure rising’ moment of the evening. Will I be off early? or late? Who’s behind me? Who’s just in front? Where is Albert? Ed Swift got the nod to be off first. Order selected and the start time rapidly approaching, shoes tied on safely, ‘others’ were discussing the route – “might take in the Pike cottage” – No reply from the stoney faced harrier! Thinking – if you go that way, you’ll be behind me……..

“Go”. Thirty seconds later,” go” again, as all 16 received their individual running start command. Albert and Tony were last to go.

The time keeper was aware that some of the early runners were a little ‘speedy’, so as the last ones went, we scurried down the mast road and back into Horwich.

Simon first back, Suzzie next – right then we’d better get organised. The rest of the runners arrived from a series of directions to complete the course. So the times and positions

1 Ali 19.07, 2 Simon 19.38, 3 Joe 20.01, 4 Albert 21.50, 5 Tony 21.59, 6 Suzzie 22.53, 7 Nic 23.54, 8 Gareth 24.59, 9 Gary 26.37, 10 Josh and Dad 27.31, 11 Gordon 28.30, 12 Tim 29.06, 13 Steve B 31.11, 14 John 35.21, 15 Dave 36.21 and 16 Ed 38.58

Thanks to the sweepers (you know who you are) the time keepers (all three) and the pike marshal (wonderful job). Thanks to race organiser for the prizes and generally everything else he did – cheers Ali. Thanks to the generous contribution to race funds from one of the ‘others’ (brilliant – thank you).

Finally – Horwich beer festival £2 entry and sample some of the fine ales. Good evening. Same routine again next year? Hope so.

Thanks everyone – Peter Ramsdale

Fleetwood Half

Fleetwood Half Marathon 24th August

I only decided to do this race the day before and in some respects I wish I had not. £20 entry fee and no Veteran O/65 award! Still, it is a good flat course ideal for fast times and well organised. With over 500 runners you were never short of company on the two lap course. The race was won by Matthew Lalor of Barlic in 1.11.19 in his first Half Marathon 5 minutes ahead of second. Our first counter was Paul Muller on home turf and just returning from honeymoon with a splendid run in 13th position. First O/55 in a time of 1.21.09. Second counter was yours truly in 1.36.53 and happy with the time and 100th place. Our final finisher was Geoff Leach 253rd in 1.52.50. All in all not a bad day for Horwich.

Ace Matthew Flatters

Horwich Ace Matthew Flatters takes Birchwood 2k title.

In a field of 44 junior runners on a very wet and miserable Sunday morning Matthew Flatters aged 10 of Horwich RMI Harriers took first place in the Birchwood 2K fun run, held just before the main 10K. With a demon start he was second place over the first 200 metres. Matthew felt comfortable to take control and run from the front thereafter. He managed to distance himself from second place some 12 seconds ahead. Matthews has shown his strength in this U11 – U 15 age race. He puts his speed & pace down to the 1 mile races he has done over the Summer Period with his club mates at Horwich where he won the U9’s category and finishing 4th in the Chorley Series and 5th in the Jubilee Series. “It was a great race, there were no hilly bits so it felt really easy. Mum Sue says he just loves all his sports and recommends any Parents who can see some potential in their children get the right coaching to bring them on.

Gargrave Show

Gargrave Show 16th August

This event was the final race in our Junior Fell Championships and with a river crossing for everyone it was certainly different.

We had seven runners in various age groups with the U/9 age group the first away. We had Theo Middleton finishing 11th after a slow start and a minute behind was Grace Pendlebury 6th girl in 18th after a typical gutsy race. There was no U/10 race so our youngsters had to run in the U/12 race and all did very well. Toby Middleton following his win at Trawden the week before was first back for us in a fine 5th place. Matthew Oldfield ran well for 10th just edging Ella Pendlebury to 11th but she was second girl. Isaac Simmonite was close behind in 13th four seconds adrift of Ella. Nine year old Freya Whittle ran well for 4th girl in 18th and the team was completed by Lydia Johnson in 28th place and seemed to enjoy the experience.

The adult race was 3.5miles with four large piles of straw to enable runners to clear barbwire fences along with a river crossing again this made for an interesting race. J Craig of Barlic won after leading from gun to tape. Our first runner home was James Simmonite 22nd despite losing six places on the descent. Next was Tony Hesketh first O/60 in 36th and the Horwich team was completed by Jason Middleton 71st after a steady race.

Turslack Fell Race 8 miles 26th July

On one of the hottest days of the year this race attracted a smaller entry than usual with the heat putting a lot of runners off racing. The race was won by John Green of Preston in 1.20.41 after a number of runners went wrong in the latter stages although there was no problem with visibilty. Tony Hesketh finished 12th in one of his favourite races in 1.29.55 remarkably second over sixty five. Michael Kay ran within himself and finished in 22nd in 1.35.45 and the final Horwich runner was David Barnes who recorded 2.15.21 for 56th place.

Harrock Hill 23rd July

Harrock Hill 23rd July

A field of almost 200 ran this the third race in the series with seven from Horwich. In form Lindsey Brindle had the run of the night finishing 13th overall and first lady by a long way. Suzanne Budgett was second over fifty and Erica Booth completed the Ladies team in 16th place. This gave Horwich second team behind Parbold Panthers. The mens race was won by Joe Johnstone of Rosssendale with Andy Lloyd taking the first veteran award in a fine fourth place after a very good race. Andy Ford was 37th and ran a steady race. Tony Hesketh was first O/65 in 56th place and clinched the series with this his third win. The Horwich contingent was completed by Mark Swindell in 105th. With the conditions being almost tropical it was an achievement to finish.

English Junior Fell Champs

English Junior Fell Championship Kettlewell – 13th July

The final race in this years championship saw large entries in all the races.

The U/8 race saw Theo Middleton finish 14th after a good race and Grace Pendlebury 24th also ran well.

In the U/10 race Cian Healy won the race and also the English Championship after a very tough race taking the lead with 400 metres to the finish and won by 7 seconds. Toby Middleton was fifth after easing off whilst in third place. For the girls Freya Whittle had a brilliant run on a tough course to finish 30th and Ella Pendlebury was 32nd. The Horwich team was completed by Lydia Johnson in 40th who was making her debut on the fells.

In the U/12 race Tom Massey sealed a top ten finish with a brave run closely followed in 12th place by Nathan Lancaster. Another runner getting better with each race.

Harriet Foley was our only runner in the U/14 race and finished 41st in the 4k race.

These results mean that Horwich finish 15th in the team placings and seeing that most of the children were running on the fells for the first time it is a excellent first season.

Bull Hill etc

Bull Hill Fell Race – 10th July

This race was a Club Championship and also the first race in the Radcliffe 3 Day event. A large field of over 200 runners started the race on a very warm evening with a very classy front end. Chris Farrell who has just been selected to run for England won easily from new signing Nick Leigh who was a previous winner and set a new record time in the process. A good run from 7th placed Jonathan Bruton and Andy Lloyd 14th was good enough to take the team prize. In the ladies race Maria Lowe was our first finisher in fourth place despite having a nasty fall. She was backed up by Sandra Kelly and Abigail Sunter for third place in the Ladies Team race.

Radclife Summer XC Race – 11th July

The second race in the 3 day event was won by Matthew Clark of Swinton R.C in a very speedy 30.10. Our first finisher was Tony Hesketh in 19th and first O/65. Pete Heneghan was first O/70 in 34th despite cycling to the race. David Barnes had a good race in 39th place.

http://ukresults.net/2014/radxc.html

Radcliffe A.C 5 Mile Trail Race – 12th July

The last day in the challenge saw Matthew Clark take the honours both in this race and the 3 Day. Tony Hesketh in 23rd clinched the O/65 award and finished 17th overall improving on last years time by almost 7 minutes. David Barnes was 32nd and beat his time from last year by 36 seconds.

This 3 day event is certainly one to do as the organisation and courses are second to none.

Many age group wins but a special mention to Freya Whittle in the L10 group.

Great Hill ‘Fell’ Race

Great Hill Fell Race – Saturday 23rd June 2014

One of the top races of the local fell calendar (*cough*) saw a display of shock and awe dominance with a stellar lineup of (some of) RMI’s finest.

Leading us home was local favourite (judging by the passionate speech given by the RO at the presentation) James Kevan in a record equaling time of 34:35. The record has stood for 18 years, so this was some performance. James – do some training!

In second place was Irish raider Ian Conroy. Ian was disappointed to let his compatriot get the better of him, but on little sleep and jet lag from the trip over, he was happy enough, and felt the can of Carlberg and a new pair of shorts was well worth the trip.

Letting the side down somewhat, but never the less completing the winning team, Alastair Murray came 4th, allowing some bloke from Swinton to beat him, and so missing out on a Horwich 1 2 3. Alastair will now have to stop taunting Ian about never having actually beaten him in a race, and how his Pike Race time is quite poor.

Rounding out the top 5, David Jackson did well to finish having ridden the Tour De France only two days previously. Disappointed that Alastair had finally got the better of him on the fells this year, Dave was quick to remind Alastair of the 8 minute margin of victory at Coniston, rendering him silent once more.

Rounding out the top 10 was fast improving Andy Ford, edging out Graham Schofield, who had decided to make the race tougher by running in his Walshes. Paul Boardman was 15th, having an easier week after last weeks 5 races in five days. Mick Crook took first V65, and Chairman Pete Ramsdale rounded out the club representation, turning up to find out what all the fuss on Facebook was about.

There are some photos kicking about, but I’ll leave you to find them yourselves.

Clougha Pike

Clougha Pike Quernmore Nr Lancaster 21st June

The penultimate race in the Junior Fell Championships took place on Saturday with ten juniors from Horwich RMI taking part.

In the U/8 race Theo Middleton finished in 12th place and Josh Houghton 21st.

In the U/10 race Cian Healy ran a superb race taking the lead in the final half mile to record a famous victory and this consolidated his position as first in the overall championship with one race to go. The next runner for Horwich was Toby Middleton in third with another great run after working his way through the field. Matthew Oldfield had his best run to date finishing in ninth and this was enough to clinch the team award for Horwich.

In the U/10 girls race our only runner was Freya Whittle who had a very good run to finish 7th considering that she is only 8 years old. This was a tremendous result.

The U/12 race saw Nathan Lancaster lead the Horwich lads home in 11th place closely followed by Robert Seddon 14th and Lucas Miliken completed the team in 21st place giving Horwich third place.

Our only runner in the U/14 was Harriet Foley and with her best run on the fells she was rewarded wih 11th place again. An improvment on her last fell race.

In the senior race Horwich only had 3 runners with Tony Hesketh retaining his O/60 Trophy for the fourth year in a fine 27th place in 49.04, closely followed by Doug Flemming 29th in 50.32 and Pete Heneghan was third O/70 in 59.04.

West Nab English Junior

West Nab English Junior Fell Championships

31st May

Despite this race being in Meltham Yorkshire, we had an excellent turnout of eleven children racing and on a difficult and technical course. All performed well.

In the U/10 Girls race we had our first Gold Medalist in Ella Pendlebury with a breathtaking run she was only beaten by 8 boys to record a famous win and keep her on course for a podium place at the seasons end.

In the U/10 boys race Cian Healey again showed a clean pair of heels to most of the field to finish third despite a nasty fall when with the leaders. He is another runner with his eyes on a top three placing at the seasons end.

Other good runs came from Ellie Green in the U/8 race with a 7th place and Freya Whittle 10th in the U/10 race.

The U/12 boys was very competitive. Tom Massey lead home the Horwich team in 7th place with good backing from Nathan Lancaster and Robert Seddon.

Our only representative in the U/14 was Harriet Foley and with her highest placing this season of 12th after a good race.

Bunny Run Relay

Bunny Run Relay 22nd April

This three man relay attracted over 100 teams many in fancy dress. We fielded two over sixty five teams (how many clubs can say that). The course was just under 2 miles with two testing climbs and some good running just outside of Howarth. The baton was a fresh egg which had to be intact at the change overs and the race was started with a egg thrown by Dave Woodhead smashing to the ground setting off 106 teams. Our A team team of O.A.P.s finished in 61st with Tony Hesketh recording the fastest time 12.55, Jim Leyland ran 15.02 and Pete Bland ran well for 14.14. Our other team finished 101st with Alan Blinkhorn running the fastest leg on second 16.40 after Pete Scott handed over after running 18.21 on the first leg and the team was brought home by captain on the night Ed Swift with a time of 19.52.

Fleming Trophy

Fleming Trophy 16th April 1.8k

We had 34 juniors running in this years race many doing it for the first time and they all put in a great deal of effort with the first six finishing within a minute. First to finish was Issac Keating finding a terrific sprint to overtake guest runner Tom Howe in the final 50 metres. Calum Moseley was third and Gemma Howe just held off a fast finishing Nathan Lancaster for fourth place. Lewis Wilkes justified his scratch start by running the fastest time in 8.42. For the girls Fraya Whittle surprised everyone apart from her coach Brenda with the fastest time recorded by a girl and she is only 9 years of age!!! All the runners received a medal, the winners got trophies and all seemed to enjoy the race.
