North of England Indoor Championships
At Sheffield on 22-23 January 2005

A small number Horwich RMI's athletes travelled to Sheffield last weekend to contest the North of England Indoor championships and acquitted themselves rather well.

Rachel Thompson made a rare outing, in from the cold of the fells and undertook some speed work competing in the U20 1500m.  Rachel ran a strong race holding second position until the final few meters when she was just pipped for the silver and had to settle for bronze, but none the less a very satisfactory result for someone who is currently in the middle of some very hard training!

Becky Crompton had a great weekend equalling two personal bests.  Her shot performance was god enough for 7th in a high quality U15 field whilst her hurdles didn't quite get her into the finals.  None the less Becky is shaping into a fine mulit-eventer and must now look forward to competing to her full range of events during the Summer.

Bruce Pilkington and Jack Thomas both contested the U17 men’s sprints and found the going very strong.  Jack matched his personal best in the 60m with 7.94 whilst Bruce ran a fine 400m to reach the semi-finals but was disappointed with his 200m run.  These two young runners are rapidly shaping into fine sprint prospects for the future and they both now go into the National Championships in February.

The range of events covered by these few athletes demonstrates the all-round coaching available at Horwich.  With the outdoor season just a few months away Horwich RMI is looking for more talented athletes to join the club.  Horwich offers specialised coaching in most events and competes in four track and field leagues during the spring and summer.  If you are interested please contact Carl Foster.
